Dynamo Lights

  • i had condensation issue with my iq-xs but ymmv

  • My son hub is making more noise than usual.
I have a front light, rear light and usb charger. Usually when just one or two of them are on you can barely notice the drag of the hub. If all three are on you then can feel the drag and hear a buzzing noise from the hub.
The last couple of days I’ve had the buzzing and dragging even if it’s just one thing being powered.
    Any ideas?
    Do these hubs need servicing?

  • Son can get serviced. And if it's not as good as it used to be it might need one?

  • Any recommendations for the cheapest front dynamo that would be adequate for unlit road night rides? Doesn't have to be great but about good enough, looking how low I can go with the B&M range at the moment

Got a edelux ii on my main audax bike which is great but can't justify the price for my other bike

  • Maybe not quite what you want but I have a Supernova E3 Pure 3 that I’ve replaced with something a bit brighter going spare if you don’t mind second hand? Front and rear going, was used on my Brompton for a number of years but at least three of those were covid affected so didn’t get used for commuting much!

Otherwise AXA (Blueline?) used to get reasonable reviews for cheap but better than cheerful lights

  • Oh great will drop you a message

  • You can send the hub/wheel to SON for servicing via SJS. It's an excellent service - capped at £65 for new internals and mine have all been returned within a few weeks.

  • Just checking ... are Supernova's tail lights the same for dynamo and ebike?

This ebay listing seems to suggest this fender tail light is compatabile with both
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256013667602

But on the supernova website it does mention "energy supply via e-bike system"

    https://supernova-lights.com/en/products/e3-tail-light-2-universal-fender-mount

It's a slick little unit, altough I can't quite get my head around the angle the cable comes out of the unit i.e. directly into the mudguard / wheel

  • It says 12V, dynamo is 6V, also DC vs AC

  • Do I remember correctly that all supernova rears are DC or am I gettin mixed up

  • Some ebikes can supply 6V or 12V. The second light is 12V only, so ebike only.
Lots of ebikes with OEM mudguards have a hole drilled in them and a channel for routing a light cable straight from the mudguard to the bottom of the seat tube where the motor normally is.

  • another point on supernova tail lights is that they have no battery/capacitor in it. If you plug them with a supernova in front, then you have a stand light because it uses the battery/capacitor of the front light but that only works with a supernova front light. With any other front light, the supernova tail light will stop as soon as you stop your bike.

Line small from Busch & Müller or its equivalent in Son, the "rear light", does have a capacitor in them for stand light.

  • What part do I need to change the connector in my hands (end of B&M light wiring) to fit the receiver on the hub (Shimano Dynamo)?

    Thanks!!

  • Snip the spade connectors off and replace with this https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/dynamos/sp-dynamo-hub-connector-kit/? Or similar. Shimano use a plastic moulded friction fit fitting that the wires go into and get clamped in, which then clicks onto the shimano hub contacts.

  • I bought the wrong supernova tail light - 12v instead of 6v. So it’s up for sale. I cut the wire to fit the frame - used it on the dunwich dynamo. £25 please. Working fine.

  • Also have a supernova triple 2 in silver if anyones keen. £80

  • Also a secula seatpost mount - uncut wire I believe. £falafel

  • Could be tempted by the Secula! Will message

  • I have an E2 Pro 2 and tail light, all wired with quick disconnects spare now if anyoen is interested.

  • I have a Sinewave Beacon v1 going for a decent chunk below retail price if anyone is interested.

  • Have these B&M front and rear with a ‘light spin’ tyre operated dynamo. Seems rather retro, and I’m not sure how to test operation. But is it likely to be worth holding on to and / or would the front light work with a hub dynamo? I still have a couple of frames with the fork mountings for the rim Dynamo.

  • It will work with a hub dynamo but make sure the rear light has a overvoltage protection, the front
bulbs blow regularly and then the extra voltage goes to the rear and fries it in an instant.

  • Thank you. That’s the kind of technical knowledge that’s beyond me. Hence why it might be better me offering this as karma for anyone more mechanically minded.

  • Also halogen lights are shite compared to modern LEDs.

  • Point taken. If anyone wants these for the price of postage to have a fiddle around/experiment just shout.
