Is it worth upgrading from a Garmin 800 if all I'm using are the maps and the tracking to upload? I haven't used it for a while and dug it out to go on a ride but found it a bit infuriating to get the route to the device. And then it wasn't really beeping much to tell me where to go! And the maps on it are ancient and haven't been updated for years ?
I guess I'm trying to convince myself that I need a new 1030 Plus at £299. But, I probably should keep struggling with the 800.

You can put up to date open street map ones on there easy enough.

I'm updating the map now. Unfortunately, I'm doing it through an adapter to the device, it's going to take a while.

The slow USB transfer speeds on the old ones are so tedious. Recommend you get a cheap SD card reader for a few quid.

The 1030 Plus has waaaaaay longer battery life and is much more stable. So, for me, yes 100% upgrade. If you're only doing 50mi on the weekend and cash is tight then maybe not.
I still own my 800 and use it for pub runs and stuff, my missus has my old 1030 and I'm using a 1030 Plus.

As Chez says you should use an SD card and a card reader.
The other benefit to this is that when the 800 crashes because of some route or map glitch, you can pull the SD card out and maybe it'll still work enough to get you home :)

I'm pretty much in the 50mi on the weekend camp! But, my 700 was probably one of the best cycling purchases I ever made and got me out a lot more! Although I've updated the map on the 800, I think I'm going to get the 1030 Plus.

As much as it pains me to say it, the 1030 Plus is the best unit they've made and I'm struggling to fault it. Maybe that's because I've used every other unit and they've all been fucking shit in some regard :) I've not gone to the 1040 because the 1030+ has been great.

I've had the 500 (a good entry level), 800 (good at the time but now very dated), 820 (shit) and now thw 1030+ and as the hipster says it is by far the best unit I have had

Does the 1030 Plus use the same mounts as the 800?
-
• #2938
They haven't changed their quarter turn mount in years so I guess "yes" is the answer.
If you want to get finicky though, the newer computers do include an out front version of this as well as the older "two rubber bands" version.

100% yes

Does the 1030 + allow you to scroll the map in and out easily while navigating?
That's the key feature I miss from the 705. The 530 does pretty much what I want apart from that, which I do miss, and would consider upgrading for.

yes, pretty sure it works the same way as previous i.e. +/- or grab icon on screen to zoom, make larger or move map all while the navigation is on.
EDIT: See DC Rainmaker again. Most info on there

I've recently bought a garmin edge explore 2.
Worth a look if you don't need the 'workout' stuff, just navigation. -

I don't know what you consider easily but you tap the screen and then hit plus or minus. Every unit I've had has done that.
-
• #2944
Well the 810 usually crashed when I did that.
Have found the 830 faultless though.

The 810 crashed when you did anything.

Sounds like it is easy!
On the 530 you need to make half a dozen button presses, while the 705 had dedicated scroll in/out buttons. Unfortunately the 530 didn't keep them.
Probably it is easy on all the touch screen units. Now the touch screen ones have all the buttons, I should probably upgrade..

Yes, thanks. Sometimes when I just want something really specific, DCR is just too much info!

So I'm trying to upload a bunch of new routes to my Garmin 530. But I realised that when trying to upload 5 routes I only get 4. If I upload the one missing one of the others go missing instead?? These are pretty long routes but I got plenty of memory left on the unit. Anyone had this?

Does the 1030 Plus use the same mounts as the 800?
It does, but because it's a lot bigger it may not fit on some on front mounts which will work with an 800. For example, it won't work on the standard K-Edge front mount - you need the XL version for the 1030/1030+.

830 is 530 with touch
