  • 250k to see a heavily documented ship.

That's the thing, it's not archaeology because we already have documents about it, it's considered a graveyard.

  • Both laughing the face of danger.
You can see tweets showing the crew prepping the hatch before launch with a Walmart wrench.
That sub was a piece of junk and anyone getting in it deserved their fate.

  • I liked the guys reasoning for not doing things like safety checks or using appropriate grade windows that won't buckle at 4km down because they'd cost more money when his customers are literally millionaires

  • “Move fast and break things”

  • "Sink fast and implode" also works

  • So like many a billionaire, they didn't know how to go down well and ended up a soggy mess somewhere near the bottom without properly exploring anything of note.

  • Someone’s had a particularly inept nosh off a billionaire. Hope you at least got took somewhere nice first.

  • I should be so lucky.

  • Writer in popular mainstream media outlet complains that popular mainstream outlets are not covering the Mediterranean tragedy sufficiently, instead focussing on inept millionaire death squish

Whatever money the company had, it’s long gone. If they had serious money, it’s almost certain to have been hidden through complex international schemes by now, probably since days ago.

Hopefully the customers’ lawyers took preemptive action when they were reported missing, so they can hopefully sue for those assets, so the various navies can then sue them for the expenses incurred.

  • Spending £1,500 on a set of Zipp 404 is no different to burning a £5 note in front of a beggar.

Spending £10,000 on a Rolex is no different to burning a £10 note in front of a beggar.

    Etc.

I really don't get this poo-pooing the idea of travelling to the depths of the ocean to see something interesting.

It's like calling everyone who goes to look at the taj mahal or machu picchu basic bitches because they could've just bought a book or Google imaged it.

  • Taj Mahal doesn't cost 250k to view through a 35cm porthole at 3000m below sea level. You're removing a lot of nuance from your comparison

They did it to say they had done it

  • The US Navy heard the implosion days ago with their "secret network of microphones" on the sea bed. Perhaps not so secret now that they are in all the papers. https://archive.ph/pSpem https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-navy-detected-titan-sub-implosion-days-ago-6844cb12?mod=hp_lead_pos1

  • what is it with bbc presenters cutting off any person who speaks in defence of striking workers whilst being interviewed. i thought the tory installed stooge / chairman had been sacked for conflicts of interest after arranging an £800,000 loan for boris.

why haven't the bbc returned to fair unbiased reporting like they used to ?

  • "A top secret military acoustic detection system designed to spot enemy submarines"

Yea, the cat is kind of out of the bag!

  • why haven't the bbc returned to fair unbiased reporting like they used to ?

Because there are many more Tory stooges in the ranks of senior management at the BBC.

  • nick robinson ( i think it was ) this morning twice cut off some poor student who expressed solidarity with her striking lecturers even though it was delaying her getting her results. i guess it didn't fit the narrative.

  • "A top secret military acoustic detection system designed to spot enemy submarines" Yea, the cat is kind of out of the bag!

They've had it since the 50s and everyone calls it the Sosus net. But the Navy calls it something else. Its existence isn't a secret, but we don't want the Russians to think that it's so good that we know where all their subs are. That would make them feel vulnerable to a first strike. Then they'd need to protect themselves with something which can't be nobbled by a first strike, perhaps like the American solution in the '60s of having B52s with nukes constantly in the air, shuttling to and from the Russian border, just in case. They had quite a lot of mishaps. They dropped 3 nukes on Spain and had to ship many tons of contaminated soil to the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Chrome_Dome

Chrome Dome was stopped and its job was taken over by submarines with nuclear missiles. They're supposed to be undetectable and they're much safer for all concerned. The Russians take the same approach. But if their subs become detectable, perhaps with improvements to Sosus or a huge fleet of underwater drones, the MAD balance will be upset and they'll need a bit of an upgrade. Maybe a fleet of Bear bombers with nukes constantly in the air? Or more land-launched missiles in silos?

Edit - here's an article which explains it much better https://spectrum.ieee.org/nuclear-submarine#toggle-gdpr

  • I never knew LFGSS was so hostile to billionaires until I read the last few pages.

If I'm so unwelcome here I guess I will take my wholly-earned wealth, risk-taking and innovation elsewhere.

  • And the wealth and job creation, of course. Always the wealth and job creation.

  • It's more the shoddy nature of it all and the willingness of idiots to pay large sums of money to endanger their lives. I see it more like the dude who jumped off the eiffel tower with homemade wings if the wings had cost an average entire life's earnings.

  • I've always really liked you (since I found out you were a billionaire).
