  • Building a big desk, may have gone too big. Think it’s about 6cm too deep (currently 75cm deep). Would it be madness to try and trim with jigsaw?

  • Intersting, I am still thinking of doing this as I have a big sheet of 18mm birch ply in the garage - how are you planning on getting cables to the top?

  • Prob just attach a basket under the desk and drill some 60 odd cm holes and add cable tidies? May try custom cut ones.

  • How fancy is your ply? During the first lockdown when I couldn't film anything I wanted a big surface in the attic (accessible only by a flimsy fold down ladder) to practice tabletop lighting so I bought two sheets of 2x1m ply, glued them together and put it on top of a scaffold frame with castors. It's not pretty but is very heavy duty and mobile (though it needed two people to lift it up through the gap). I sanded and oiled etc and was careful with the corners but it still looks a bit naff. I certainly won't be removing it when we eventually sell this place.

Second lockdown I wanted something prettier. So I bought a 2x1 oak tabletop and a pair of legs that are a bit like this from a local welder: https://www.hartleysdirect.com/hartleys-industrial-square-table-legs.html It went in the spare bedroom and now we don't have guests. (Two birds with one stone). It's great. Looks lovely when it's not covered it shit. So heavy duty I can jump around on it. And obviously @chrisbmx116 is jealous when he hears of how much reach I have with my 1m wide mousepad in PUBG so he's decided to copy me. Again.

Cables I got a boring bit for a drill and took a chunk out the centre. Has a nest underneath to support extension etc. The hole I removed also fits a monitor stand but I may need to do another one or extend it when I eventually get around to picking up the Ergotron LX Dual arm you recommended.

Chris, stop this shit attempt at a humble brag and realise that there is no such thing as too big a desk. Only too small. My next desk will just be me drilling a circle big enough to fit into out of the floorboards, and lowering myself onto a swivel stool.
