I’m putting a rigid mtb together for my wife. It will serve as commuter but also go bike packing. She cycles to work every day but’s not into cycling in any sports/obsessive oriented way.
Im considering what casette to combine with a single 38t chain ring. I want her to be able to climb with luggage on the bike. Is 46t over kill? 42t? What say you?

Things nobody ever said when climbing with luggage:
"I'm glad I don't have any easier gears than this, this is plenty" -

Definitely 46

You are correct!

Love this!
What are the tyres like?

Recent crash and a unavailability of black smp saddles means Lemond has now gone bananaman bike. Nice excuse to upgrade the wheels with some more legacy tech. Not sure if it counts as mgoof though.

So far my only review of the tyres is that they look sick. Have only been for a short spin round the local park, and what that mostly established was that my attempts to decontaminate the brakes were a failure, so I was mostly focussed on not dying as I came down the hill. Going to try setting the pads and rotors on fire to see if that improves matters, and if not then I’ll have to get new ones.

Ta! Couldn't resist and ordered a set of those bars, they look really cool.

Attack the rotors with abrasives then isopropyl, they’ll be fine.
Don’t waste your time with the pads though, especially not with fire. Vapourised contaminants are not very therapeutic to your lungs. Just buy a new set from Uberbike or wherever, they’re cheap.

Looks great with that silver and yellow on top, excuse to get new wheels because of the saddle is totally linked together

Yeah, I did isopropyl on the rotors and isopropyl & sandpaper on the pads but I reckon the pads are fuckered. Any en flambé will be done outside so no risk of inhaling anything dodgy, worth a try, and if it doesn’t work then hey at least I got to set something on fire. It’ll take up some time between now and new pads getting delivered.
