It’s acceptable, but only as long as they didn’t charge you for it.
-
• #14878
It is highly unusual.
But who knows what's happening over at the breweries anyway, maybe they are combining the ends of different batches to make full barrels occasionally.
-
• #14879
Barrel's empty, just popping off to the gents to top it up for you.

£4.50 for the pint / 2 half pints

Sounds very shoddy to me, where was the pub ?

If you go to the Anchor and Hope in Clapton and ask for a 'half and half' the bartender will pour you a half Fuller's ESB / half Fuller's London Pride pint.

When I first cam to London, I learnt that the 'thing' in a Young's pub was to order a pint of Mix - half Young's Special and half Young's Ordinary.
I'm such a creature of habit, I still do it when I go in a Young's pub, even though the bar staff look at me like I'm a moron.

Are these 1/2 & 1/2s variants on the 'pints' of Light & Bitter my old man used to drink in the '70s & '80s?
( You hoped the bar person would pour you a generous half of Bitter, to go with the bottle of Light Ale). -
• #14885
And asking for a pint of Mix doesn’t change that?
-
• #14886
It's all good if you've asked for a mix but getting mugged off like that can do one.
Half and half is a scotch and half a pint and nothing else. Not mixed together before anyone asks.

Or a snakebite
-
• #14888
I’m intrigued by this but will not remember to order it by the next time I find myself in a young’s pub.

I grew up going to Yorkshire pubs, came down to London for uni and everyone was ordering larger tops, larger halfs, snakebites or whatever. No bloody clue. Just have a nice Marstons you monsters

I grew up in Hull pubs full of Watneys Red Barrel and party sevens.
Going down to London to uni with Shepherd Neame was a step up lol

Up brum way, half and half was bitter and mild mixed bitd. If mild even exists anymore.
But I would have refused that pint and given them some advice about it.

1/2 bitter 1/2 mild was called a “Mickey Mouse” around Nottingham.

In Wigan a half and half was 2 parts squeezed Andalusian lemon to 3 parts Domestos, also known as a Grande Ama de Casa.

Up in Sheffield snakebite and black was a thing. In our shared toilette the bath, which was the first receptacle past the door, was stained a shade of purple after a year.

snakebite and black was a thing
The only drink to look and taste exactly the same coming out as it did going in.
-
• #14897
Snakebite and black with a Pernod, Red Witch?
-
• #14898
That was a Purple Nasty in rural Hampshire. Tasted like cough candy twists.
-
• #14899
Diamond White + Castaway was the best 50/50 mix drink going bitd.
-

Purple nasty in SE London in the early 90s was half lager, half cider and blackcurrant. Not heard of the Pernod variant but WOULD TRY IN 2023 M9.
No way, poor quality bar staff there.
