RE: Baselayers. I tend to not sweat a great deal so on hot days I find the sweat evaporates really quickly and I overheat. If I wear a baselayer (merino, not mesh) my sweat stays on that and takes longer to evaporate which means I feel cooler. I tend to find the same with wearing a cap. Horses for courses and all that.

I often wear a base layer in the heat. Not because it is cooler (it's not) but because the zips and shit on jerseys can irritate and I'm too lazy to be taking it on and off when doing all day/night rides.
Caps I wear mostly even if it's hotter to keep sun off my face. Sometimes when it's really hot I'll ditch the cap (or soak it in water if there's water around).
During Pendle, I had some time when ride buddy was fixing a flat so removed my base layer here and left it off for the remainder of the ride.

Did you have time to sort out that mudguard too?
-
• #6535
That mudguard is off the other bike and was only fitted to the Mason for the Wessex series because org requested one and I like to be nice. I didn't change its adjustment. It's zipped tied on so I didn't bother taking off for Pendle, assuming shit weather.
I fucking hate mudguards so thanks for reminding me. I'll rip it off when I've got the energy to deal with working on the bikes again.

In case anyone was waiting with bated breath for a review of my new pants, here it is.
I wouldn't bother with the Endura padded boxers again personally. I find all of the saddles I use comfortable enough without padded shorts but get quite bad saddle sores, which means I have to wear some padding. The padding in the boxers is much thinner than in a standard pair of bibs so doesn't seem to offer much in the way of saddle sore prevention. I was hoping that full bibs were overkill and I could get away with less padding but no dice. I might give them another go when it's a bit cooler. The heat/sweat/friction of the last few weeks is probably asking too much of them.

There's a smattering of science in this article, but it seems even the professionals in the industry can't 100% agree.
