They look nicer than pozi
Says you. Unless it's something like a hand made screw in a mechanical clock I prefer the look of pozi/hex/torx/anything else.

• #40978
Pozi is pretty ugly but hex and torx I think look OK

Slotted screws how quaint
-
• #40980
Im guessing your talking about plain screws, aye because they are pish to use and phillips/pozi is a better head to screw in with.
Torx are even better imo

Roberts, for those in the know

Horses for courses.
We put up some shelves with black metal supports with viable screws. I spent ages hunting down the right length japaned slotted screws - couldn't find them so shorted longer ones. I also made sure all the slots lined up.
Obviously I could have just used some gold ano pozis. But that would have looked shit.
I also used brass slots for modding a desk top to a kids bookcase. Again I could have used gold ano pozis. But that would have looked shit.

Philips are for cheap factories that don't want to invest in torque drivers. Should be banned.
-

If you're needing to use torx driven screws to avoid the driver slipping out when fitting a door handle then may I introduce you to the concept of pilot holes :)
Obviously use whichever screws you like the look of best when issues such as pullout resistance, needing to drive at high torque are irrelevant

This I can get behind.
There is no reason for Philips bits and screwdrivers to be cluttering up tool boxes. The mini USB A of the screw world.
The only thing worse is those stupid fucking JIS screws motorcycle brake reservoirs have. Absolute fucking sadists.

With Philips and torx screws it is quite difficult to remove paint from the screws prior to removal. Would prefer slotted screws when they will be covered in paint.

What have I begun

Go on ... say you want to buy a drill!

• #40989
what did you use in the end?

pozi - turned out I had a bunch in my spares box which made the decision for me

Plain slotted screws have no place outside of antique furniture.
Philips is for old cars.I like Pozi but Torx has its place.
On this subject, why is it that most people only use Pozi screws, but only have Philips drivers? It really bugs me when I am fixing stuff at e.g. my father in law's house. Buy the correct screwdrivers!
-
• #40993
Does that really work?
That looks awesome.
-
• #40994
Pretty much. Enough that you don't have to carry around six screwdrivers.
I got it to adjust Blum hinges as all the screws on one hinge seem to be different. Works, but I think Blum just made up their own standard rather than a mix of pozi or philips anyway.

Trying to use Philips on pozi is worse though! And then even more annoying is when you come across JIS type, that Philips just don't quite fit, but fit well enough that someone else has usually mashed them up beyond repair before you get there. Or when your chosen brand of Philips bit and drywall screws aren't playing well together! Having a couple of PR2 bits on hand can be a real lifesaver.

JIS
I'll say it again, but what sort of sadist uses these.
They need to be banned and manufacturers who've used them forced to run a recall. Happy for there to be a 1yr amnesty for them to organise it without reprisals.

The Tamiya thread is coming for you

Just use an impact driver and mash it, then you don't need to worry about having the right bit!

if you wear all the notches off it's an anti-theft nail.
Should be able to get slotted brass countersunk woodscrews via eBay, that's where I get mine. They look nicer than pozi however agreed on the annoying burrs.
