Its both a brand and dutch word for cargo bike. (from my understanding) Cant really expect normies to get this stuff right.

Also dont let getting it right get in the way of getting it done. If you cant find the right stuff get the wrong stuff and just paint the hell out of it with outdoor paint and kick the can down the road 3-5 years. Also get a cover. Cargo bikes die because people dont cover them.

You're right. I'll push a bit more with phenolic ply (checked and acre lane timber don't do it) but need to get it back to work asap, would be a shame to miss the summer with the kids on it.
I've re packed the original wheel with fresh grease last night, hope you find time to re-build the brakes tonight...

  • Exactly, winter time id the time to work on cargo bikes with kids. Suns out funs out, only necessary maintenance to keep it running.

I couldn't find any of this sort of thing from the usual highstreet suppliers so I think you might have to order it in from somewhere online, who you can probably get to cut it up as well. The quick search I just did looks like they will cut and ship and they also do phenolic edge paint. It looks like it'll be proper playground-quality material but it ain't going to be cheap so it's worth shopping around.

I would go so far as to say modern plywood is really dreadful quality compared to the past though. I made my box from Wickes 9mm and 12mm ply and it looks good because I've finished it well but the plywood itself is soft and weak. I don't know where the nice stuff comes from.

  • Can you be smart with your box design and put some kind of slope towards a drainage slot along an inside perimeter? Presumably holding water in this area is the reason they rot. This might be a cheaper and more environmentally friendly option over the plastic coated ply. Do you have a place to park it where it can dry out quickly?
