Just use a carbon collapsing pole. Someone linked to a supplier recently.
Personally I like pyramid tends, they're a lot nicer places to spend time, big door to see out, can sit up and change. Lighter too. If bugs aren't an issue then a tarp will be great and even lighter.
That Decathlon looks like a copy of the hilleburg akto.

I have the decathlon tent. It's ok. It's almost doubled in price from when i bought it a few years ago, so it may not the bargain that it used to be. It is quick to pitch and has never let me down, but is far from perfect. There are plenty of reviews on the decathlon website, and on youtube, about it's strengths and weaknesses. I suggest you peruse those thoroughly before you buy one.

Is their an altaplex equivalent, shell only? I guess a mld solomid might be that? Or hexamid pocket tarp? Better ideas.
I think I was sil nylon, dyneema is super nice but not that long a lifespan
The altaplex groundsheet is worn out, so i could sacrifice it and cut it and the netting our and give it a new lease of life as just a tarp, but perhaps a shame to loose bug net from it.
I have a duomid that I do really like, but it's a bit big pitch size and heavy. But it's a bomber design.

this is beautiful:
https://www.meadowphysics.com/product/abode/Locus out of Japan definitely have something to suit:
https://locusgear.com/portfolio_category/shelter/?lang=enJB will be along soon to recommend Yama Gear also :)

Thanks I'll have a look at them. The first one is too open though. I need something to get me through a storm.

Yama is great. With that said, I did actually sell my Cirriform. Mostly because of pitch size and how many stakes are required. It was so easy to get a really, really taught pitch that would hold up to high winds (from experience, not just internet hyperbole), but it took 10 stakes... for a tarp!
Also, this summer in the Sierra is going to probably be the buggiest on record and while I'm okay in a bug bivy, I'd really much rather have the space of a proper tent if I'm sitting for a few hours in the evening, so my pack is going to get a bit heavier and I'm going to buy a Double Rainbow and live in a life of luxury.
@skinny you are way too tall to use a Pocket Tarp I'm afraid. FYI MLD are now using SilPoly across the board outside of the Supermid.
Another option is the Liteway PyraOmm solo. SilPoly, cheaper than MLD, available immediately, Ukraine based: https://liteway.equipment/shelters/pyraomm-solo/pyraomm-solo-tarp

Thanks mate. Is it silpoly I want?
Reviews say 175cm max. I'll try find their dimensions and compare as I'm 186.

SilNylon is supposedly 'stronger' than SilPoly, but SilPoly absorbs less water and will not sag.
I just returned my MSR Front Range to REI because the sag was unbelievable. Go to bed with a very taught pitch and wake up three hours later at midnight with a flapping, saggy mess. So yeah, I'd be avoiding SilNylon unless it was for a very lightweight cat cut tarp that probably won't get rained on, or if it had some other structure provided by the frame of a proper tent.
Ah, I read the dimms that said 276cm x 120 and assumed it would be fine.

Okay thanks good to know.
I mean, in all likely hood I'll use the altaplex till it dies and then use the duomid with family and or dog.

AFAIK poly is more uv resistant than nylon too, although coatings will mitigate that.

I've been using a Decathlon tarp and hammock setupnfornthe last few trips. These have been excellent.
Now looking at a bivi/ tarp setup for a bit more versatility when staying in campsites.
Spotted this today.https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/1-5-man-trekking-tarp-mt900/_/R-p-305779?mc=8545743

Heavy!
Jb will be along to tell you which taro to buy! -
• #2664
Haha! Stop it. I'm done with tarps for a while I think.
I had a Tarptent Double Rainbow arrive yesterday and its a palace and relatively light and relatively cheap. Super stoked on using that for the rest of the summer.

Sorry I know nothing about tarps, I like tents.

Specs sound solid. But I’d try and avoid flat tarps and stick to a catenary cut tarp. Easier to get a good pitch, assuming you’re using poles. The gossamer gear solo tarp for example.

Having bad my zpacks out in the rain, the upper seems ok, thought maybe one pinhole. But the floor is done. So I will either cut it out Inc netting to make superlight tarp or replace floor.
The liteway solo seems good, but there are some comments on stitching issues. That said I might not fit (not sure why dimensions seem ok) and the duo has zips on both sides, which I've no need for.
I come back to my issue, I need a new tent that I can trust to be bomber in a rain storm. I've lost faith in the altaplex now, it's had a hard life with me and earned its keep.
I think I want a mld solomid really. But I will miss the inbuilt net of the altaplex.
Think I'm talking out loud!
Maybe I need to just suck up a few grams and use my duomid. Actually not sure if nylon or poly, just the floor size of it makes it harder to pitch in tight spaces.
Edit: After some coffee and thought, the best thing is to just use a groundsheet inside the altaplex, and then at some point replace it. The current ground sheet is like 60g or so, so hardly killing me carrying it still in there. And spend an hour looking for any pin holes in the upper by running it under water. Both of those and I'll be happy it's bomber again.

DCF tape goes a long way as far as I understand. Really resilient. But assuming you knew that. Unless you bought it in the last 4 weeks it’s silnylon, but MLDs is the best nylon there is as far as I understand.
You could also buy a bathtub floor from Yama, Zpacks, MLD etc etc. heavier, but nicer to have than just a groundsheet that water and dirt could get onto the top of.
-
• #2670
Yeah the tape is really good, it's got a good bit on from damage I did using it racing srmr in 2019 (god that's a while ago).
I have some groundsheet material so will just use that. thanks for being a sounding board. I do think I'll buy a solomid when the opportunity arises.
I think I might as well keep the bug net in the altaplex, I'm sure if I take it out I'll miss it.

Keep an eye on reddit.com/r/ulgeartrade (when Reddit is back online in 48 hours or so).
If you want me to facilitate shipping it to you I'm more than happy to. Solomid's come up often.

Thanks appreciate it!

Have you looked at SlingFin? Maybe too heavy for you but the Copperspur clone they make looks great. UV resistance/longevity prioritised, extra zipper sliders preinstalled, internal guy lines for high winds. They also do smaller more lightweight designs.
Greg McCahon who is riding Alaska/Argentina and posting videos on bikepacking.com just got one and seems to rate it so far.

• #2674
thanks, i didn't know of them. Sure they're good, but not quite the design i want. I love a single pole pyramid, easy to pitch, solid in conditions and good to sit up.

No problem, thought that might be the case.
I think our Big Agnes will be toast by the time we reach Ushuaia so are looking at future replacements/upgrades.
It is 1.5kg and packs down to 32cm x 15 cm (L x D)
I did look at the Lanshan 2 pro but the only one I could find needs hiking poles to keep it up. Unless there might be another model I cant find? https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/2-man-tunnel-trekking-tent-mt900-ultralight/_/R-p-323505?mc=8586318 also another strong contender.
