Made the mistake of assuming my catmint had snuffed it over the winter and wasn’t coming back, found it yesterday, merrily sprouting away in the discarded clod of earth that I had casually chucked aside when digging it out to replace it. Have apologised profusely to it and found it a new home in a planter.
The catmint that I did not dig up to make space is, of course, still dead as a dodo, so maybe the digging up was the motivation it needed to get on with growing again.
