  • Actually some XC bikes out on the trails though, going pretty fast

  • Any folk on 26" want a rear mudhugger doobry before I chuck it in the tip? Collect ealing.

  • I’m going to a bike park (Winterberg) for the first time this Thursday. Anything I should take beyond my bike, full face, protection, kit, tools, spare brake pads, spare pedals, gopro, first aid kit, backpack?
Cleaned, checked, and lubed my bike yesterday. Chucked on a new rear tire at the same time (front is new as well).
    Any tips are welcome 🙏🏻

  • Spare mech hanger. Snacks.

  • Don’t take a backpack! Best thing about bike park is not having to wear a pack.

  • Yesterday was National Trail Day here in the states, so a day late but got some work in today. New trailer was aces at carrying some trail tools, and a bunch of wood (not pictured).

A bigger bike than you thought you needed ;-)

  • Good one, ordered just now.

  • In that case I’ll leave my Dave at home and bring my Stereo 140 instead 🙏🏻. Don’t have a bigger bike so I’ll stick to the kiddie lines 😅

  • Shock pump?

  • Thinking about getting an MTB. Type of riding includes doing the length of SDW in a day, plus some bikepacking around the UK, Surrey hills etc. My thoughts are a modern hard tail 29er with progressive geo in steel/ alu as I want something simple to maintain and the next step along from a gravel bike. Considering Specialized Chisel as the frame looks fairly light and could be built up to light weight bike for all the climbing in SDW etc, but wondering if being a XC racing bike might be limiting long term for more bikepacking stuff (lack of mounting points etc), although might be a good starting point to get a feel for what works?

  • What's progressive geo?

I'm biased but a Holt sounds great for that list of riding.

I wouldn't ride a specialized. They're the company that go around suing people and cancelling their ambassador programme on a dime. Sure you can buy from a better company.

  • I've answered this many times, reposting below.
I have ridden many thousands of kms that sound like your ideal riding.

you want a second hand steel hardtail 29er frame. anything since 2010 will be fine.
don't worry about whether the forks need a service or the wheels are a bit old. you're not racing.
pinkbike offers up many interesting options thanks to its great filter tools.

  • and I have said this MANY times that I dont get credited for evangelising that XC bikes ARE gravel bikes. I was ridiculed at the time just like all geniuses.

  • any of the carbon race 29" hardtails - even the 100mm travel ones - would be pretty good for this general use case but for two reasons

    • up front cost
    • difficulty in attaching stuff to them safely

that said, if you can overcome both of these things, go nuts.

  • I thought the standard answer was 'Geometron'?

  • The world was not ready. It's too ahead of its time

  • This is definitely Amey's future bikepacking rig

  • Looks like them things that folk ride at Epping forest.

I never see them on the trails. Just at the tea hut.

  • that with bafang is perfect!

  • I have a Chisel for precisely this kind of riding, will dig some pictures out of my set-up but basically full frame pack and saddle pack is enough for most 2-3 day trips. Lack of mounting points only an issue if you want to carry loads....

Noticeably quicker and better at climbing than slacker/steel 'trail' options, way faster at descending than a gravel bike, what's not to like?

keep saying that to yourself and it'll be true, promise
