Anyone doing 9 counties this weekend?

There's was a dude on the train on the way out going to some rugby 7s thing with a mate. He was a crypto recruiter (I didn't know that was a thing) but he'd previously worked at Wiggle as a product developer (DHB kit) so was quite curious about what we were doing. That numbed some of the pain of that shitty train journey. If you're on here, thanks dude. :)

What's the official line on claiming DIY points from UlTrAs?
-
• #12585
Technically not allowed if it's a competitive event.

• #12586
What about All Points North?
-
• #12587
If you had entered as a DIY by mandatory before hand, you might have been ok.
-
• #12588
I don't think riding organised events as a DIY should count unless you do them fixed.
Joking (kinda)
On an actually serious fixie note I want to know why there isn't a fixed wheel RRtY award. I really think there should be one but 1) I'm not sure how to go about campaigning for one and 2) I am 99% sure I don't have the energy or time right now. Can someone do something about this for me please
I will probably get bored in the school holidays and start emailing the Masters of the Audax Blue Lodge to see how one goes about this though, I can feel it. Have fears it will involve various motions and the AGM :(

The personal gratification and ability to tell the 10ish people who might be slightly impressed is enough. Though I wouldn't say no to an extra badge from when I did mine so it can sit in a drawer with all the other badges I've got.

Hi I don't think we've met IRL but if you knew me you'd realise I'd tell waaaay more than 10 people about it
-
• #12591
Oh, I tell everyone don't worry about that, people tend to get bored when I'm only just explain what fixed gear is and I struggle to even get to the point of introducing the concept of Audax to them.
-
• #12592
How do you explain audax to people? When I say I'm doing a long ride and they ask, are you riding with others, and I then say, well, kind of. Then try and explain it's just a bunch of checkpoints we have to hit within a certain time, and it's more about survival than "winning". Never really seems to make any sense.

Mostly other people aren't interested anyway; in case they are you're lacking story telling skills?

I want to know why there isn't a fixed wheel RRtY award
I'm far too enthusiastic about fixed audax than is good for me. I emailed the fixed wheel challenge organiser this week asking how I can buy a fixed wheel challenge patch. They do exist and I'll be sending my £2 affixed to a piece of cardboard and a SAE shortly.
I also asked if there is a super fixed randonneur patch. There is not. For the good reason that so few people take part that the fixed wheel organiser will be swimming in badges for the next century. I see his point.
As I'm rather enjoying the back and forth I'd be happy to ask him about setting up a RRTY fixed award. I'm pretty sure that no one has ever asked for it before.
It would be great to gauge support for a fixed RRTY or having a badges section for fixed on the Audax UK website. Are all of you fixie audaxers Audax UK members?

Whilst emailing the Fixed Organiser about points and stuff a few years ago I did mention that I was doing a Fixed RRTY and he made it clear to me that it wasn't a thing which I followed up to confirm I was aware and it was purely a personal goal.
He did add that:
Fixed ARound The Year is not the sort of description likely to be popular even in Audax groups
So if only he could see the fervour here.

Probably!
To add re fixie audax UK membership, if people are and aren't affiliated with any other club, I'd suggest making your club LFGSS, for literal fixie points. -

I have prodded him towards this thread. We are keen and should be encouraged with patches and honours.
-
• #12598
I'm sure if someone offers to design and source a batch of patches I'd buy one(*) for £20 to help get them funded so that the FW organiser isn't out of pocket.
* Fixed SR badge, never did a RRTY fixed or not.

BTW, not sure how much the fixed organiser is out on his bike nowadays but I was always happy to see that much of the correspondence from him was hand/bike delivered despite him living a good two hour round trip ride from me.

You have my full support just so that @youramericanlover has to do it.
Rourke I think
