I'm having trouble with calculators: I'm building Superstar Pave Ultra (rim brake) rims on old Hope Pro 2 disc hubs.
Rims are 585mm ERD (measured with two 200mm spokes), which matches published ERD. I need to double check the hubs but using published figures for now.
Front - Left PCD 56mm, right PCD 54mm, centre to left flange 20mm, centre to right 33mm.
Rear - Left PCD 56mm, right PCD 54mm, centre to left flange 33mm, centre to right 20mm.DT calculator gives front 268mm & 270mm, rear 270mm, 268mm
Edd gives front 284mm & 284mm, rear 284mm, 284mm
Spokecalc(Roger Musson) gives front 282mm & 284mm, rear 284mm, 282mm
Pro Wheelbuilder gives front 282mm & 284mm, rear 284mm, 284mmWho is right, I tend to trust Roger usually but I've never had DT being so far out? Is it safe enough to go 284mm all around?

Probably OK to go 284 all round, would be better if you gave more precise numbers to confirm. I'm guessing you've either put the wrong amount of spokes or crosses on the DT one.

Did you find the published dimensions and manually enter them into each calculator or did you look them up on each calculator?
I've seen measurements show up the wrong way around ie the measurement the locknut in to the flange entered where it was looking for centre out to flange before.

ha ha, just re-did the DT for the 15th time and...feel a bit of a tit.
I rounded everything over 0.3mm up but I realise I mis-read that so I'll double check. Feeling more confident now DT is more in line with the rest. Will re-run and check roundings before I order.
@M_V did a bit of both but as above will re-measure and double check everything now I know that the DT calc was all my own doing. Sapim definitely gets ignored, even though I prefer their spokes.
Thanks both!

I know this sounds dumb because t I think the DT calculator sometimes defaults to 2x lacing

I bought a secondhand set of corima carbon rim brake wheels, I haven't owned a set of carbon rims before but they're seems to be some minor flaking over the weave pattern. Person I bought them from said he's only ever used the cork pads with them, which I've heard shouldn't cause much damage to the rims. Would this sort of degradation be cause for concern?

Looks just like wear to the brake track. The brake pads are essentially braking on epoxy resin, not carbon. Once that wears through, you'll start going into carbon.
I can't say whether they're too worn or not, I'm not an expert. I'd be happy riding it though -

Sweet. Would you (or anyone) bother trying to fill the small cracks with epoxy to keep the wheels going?
Also need to convert the dt swiss 240s hubs to campag from shimano. Will put a wanted ad up, unless anyone has one to sell or swap?

AFAIK nobody reputable does that. Brake tracks get a lot of heat, could delaminate and injure someone. Not a risk a small carbon repair shop would assume.
Also, having a flat enough brake track it's not that easy -

I’m planning to build up an endurance road wheelset, like a hunt aerowide 34. Looking at DT Swiss RR521s. They come in a minimum 24h drilling, will that be ok for front and back? I know Sheldon says they shouldn’t be equal but I’m not a heavy rider. Can anyone recommend a disc hub - doesn’t need to be superlight but good value. The VW golf of hubs if you will! Cheers :)

What’s the go to polished silver shallow rim these days? (For rim brakes) - tb14 are too spendy, adhn still rated? Anything else I should look out for? Is anyone building all silver wheels from a factory?
Cheers in advance

adhn still rated?
The three questions which usually lead to the hive mind answer in this thread:
- Is it available in the desired size/colour/drilling?
- Is it the best value among the contenders?
- Is the manufacturer's name an anagram of Linkin? 🙂
- Is it available in the desired size/colour/drilling?

As far as I know -
- Yes (Not got hubs yet so rims will influence choice, 32h 3x 👍🏻)
- Yes? (don’t know but they’re looking like the best value)

If the tester-approved option isn’t available for some reason, you could also try DCR rims (rated, but I’ve not tried) or Ambrosio P20s (cheap and decent, but probably unavailable in your preferred drilling).

Don’t buy p20s. Unless they’ve been updated they’re nearly impossible to get tyres seated on

You feel smug when you’ve succeeded though :) v1 P20s plus Veloflex Corsas were the toughest mount I’ve ever done, it’s true.

Question for any experienced wheel-builder out there.
I am looking into getting a carbon tubular track wheelset. Would it be cost-effective to build my own (say with reputable Chinese rims) or is it cheaper to buy an off the peg set?
-
• #11544
if you can source the materials cheaper, you can build them yourself. the DT Swiss TRC 1400 track wheelset for example are about 1560 € at bike24, but the DT Swiss track hubs can be found relatively cheap. maybe ask in the orient express thread for some rated rims

Ok, thanks. I'll check out what are recommended rims over in the orient express thread. DT Swiss hubs sound nice, but isn't there a decent forum recommended version like Novatecs or something?
-
• #11546
Those TRC 1400 are amazing (I have a set) but the specific aero 240 hubs you get with them aren't available separately.
@timages Halo are probably the recommended good-but-not-bling fixed hubs and then take your pick of LightBicycle or Farsports rims. Another option is Arkane Wheel Works who would build you something perfect for your needs cheaper than DT Swiss/Corima etc but much less hassle than sourcing your own components.

The "or something" includes Formula and KT equivalents, plus the house brand hubs like Halo which are made by one of those three Taiwanese factories. Just get whichever is on offer (which is usually Novatec). You can go bling with Campag/DuraAce/DT but you're not getting any functional advantage.

Thanks, good to know there is another route to go down if sourcing and building my own becomes a bit too much effort
-
• #11549
Ah yes, I thought there are some other makes of hubs like the Novatecs. Thanks. BTW, no danger of me going bling - just looking for a decent and functional pair of track wheels that won't break the bank and wondering aloud whether building my own could work.

Afraid you just missed out on the last group buy! Two tub rims shipped from lightbicycle isn’t crazy expensive though (probably in the realm of £300).
Lacing is the easiest possible, truing is the same.
