Do you have Auto Archive turned off or something? The old ones should be saved.

Well done- look forward to hearing.
I almost tried one this time last year when I needed a new unit. Some poor reviews put me off - but that was the previous version, the 620, so they may have leapt forward with this one! -

Looking for a fairly basic navigation device good for walking and riding. Is there such a thing?
Don't need power, just routing and decent battery life. Would be great if it had an internal battery and also take AA batteries or similar, but not holding my breath on that.

Cheap etrex

just routing
Do you mean just follow a line on a screen, no maps or turn-by-turn navigation?
-

Already have an etrex, it's great but it does tend to throw itself off my bars to the ground at first sign of any bumps. Ideally I'd like a smaller etrex with a sleeker user interface and a securer bike interface that could be charged via USB.
Upload a GPX and follow a line on a screen is all I really need.

Are you using the Garmin etrex slide mount? It's shit.
I prefer the Garmin 1/4 turn mount adapter and run a lanyard for backup. The old Wahoos would do what you want - smaller than etrex, quicker to use (wifi sync etc)

Had a quick google but didn't pull anything up, where do I find this non-shit adapter?
-

i read about this on the internet but have had zero issues with garmin's own mount zip tied, it hasnt come off even once on bumpy stuff, i still have a lanyard to secure

I bought a couple branded "TUSITA"

Maybe my bumpy is bumpier than your bumpy.
I added a strip of electrical tape to the back to make it a very tight fit but then found the quarter turn mounts so fucked this stupid one off.

Some etrex mounts are a bit poor. Put some tape (thick like Gorilla) on the mount, so it's on the base of the slide bit, this will create some pressure and then should be solid. Also use a leash around the bars. They do work really quite well.
Next best would be OSMAND app.

Is the mount garmin's own one or something else from amazon or something?
I have two mounts and two etrexs and have never had a problem with these. I do have lanyard to be safe but it's never slipped from the mount even if I bottom out the fork on a jump or crash. But maybe I've just been lucky.
You could use rechargeable batteries, you can get ones with built in usb port, like these
Not quite as sleek as charging the device itself but can be better this way if it's raining.

There's a fix for that: https://www.lfgss.com/comments/16437698/

OK, back from the tour and a first run-out for the iGS630 and first impressions are it's fine. Does the job with decently clear instructions when navigating. Not tried it at night, but it was fine at first light and cleary visible throughout the day even in stupidly bright sunlight.
Haven't tried route planning on it as cycle.travel does the trick for me and it's easy enough to load gpx files onto the computer through the app. I think it's perhaps route planning sites I have an issue with: I'm all for quiet roads, etc., but that generally means the road surface isn't as good, is more 'up and down' and often a bit roundabout. That was annoying, but not the device's fault.
Would probably take issue with the claimed 35-hour battery life. It went from just under half full to 5% within five hours, though that was on constant navigational use so perhaps not surprising. I gave it a 10-minute boost charge through the Anker and it was fine for the rest of the ride (another two hours).
Fits a standard Garmin mount nicely, comes with lanyard/screen protector and, honestly, I can't really fault it for the money. What it doesn't do is re-routing, which some people would find annoying, but I actually preferred on this trip when I wanted to slightly ignore the route and go off piste.
Loads of other features on it I haven't got near to using yet and probably never will. But if I do, I'll add to this overview.

That sounds great, how does it show that you are off the route and does it show you a straight line to where you can re-join the route?
-
• #2894
It says something like 'Off route' on the screen and has arrows pointing you back in the direction you need to go to get back onto the route. The arrows turn red the further away you get from the route. It's nothing better than 'OK', but what's helpful is you can see roads/paths that will get you back on track, so it's not difficult to do that. Just doesn't give you a line to follow. Future firmware updates may change that, I'm told, but for my purposes it was absolutely fine.
Actually, one more gripe (probably more my fault) was that the gradient screen doesn't really give you a great idea of where to go. It shows how far you've gone up the climb and the level of gradient, but when I was climbing out of Amboise and the 'climb' consisted of more than one road, I didn't know where to go. However, it seemed to then give me some indications on the next hill I went up, so maybe it was just me being dense the first time round.

Tempted to give Hammerhead a go at their sale price (although there is nothing wrong with my 830)
-
• #2896
That's cheap! K3 announcement must be imminent
-
• #2897
Everything I've heard says it's shit
830 is a good device. Don't waste your cash. I'll send my IBAN if it's burning a hole.

• #2898
Ha everything I've read says it's great but how much of that is influenced reviewers. However, the 8 hr battery is just not good enough for the rides I do so cash will be staying in the pocket.
-
• #2899
I like mine and it’s a good deal at that price. The other bonus is that it hasn’t suddenly died on me in contrast to my Garmin 800, 1000 and inreach mini

I have one, it's great. Where did you get 8 hours from? I've done 12 hour rides without a charge several times using the map and routing.
wow I am stupid
