Cycling holiday recommendations for Sept 23

Posted on
  • Hi!

Desperate for a 3-4 day road cycling holiday for end of September. I’m considering Mallorca, Girona and possibly Calpe.

Looking for some good hills to tackle and good weather. Likely it will be my brother and I going together.

I’ve not been to either of those places, does anyone have a view / recommendations?

    Many thanks!

  • Corsica would be my off-the-beaten-track recommendation. For a more mainstream destination with more guaranteed weather (and some amazing riding) then Gran Canaria

  • Me and my bro have done Majorca, Girona & Dolomites all around the start of Sept.

Girona is excellent, a nice little city to hang out in even without bikes. More mixed riding, great climbs but also great flat stuff. Think there’s a closed road HC TT up Els Angels around the end of Sept.

Majorca has perfect roads and cheap hotels, though end of sept many of them may have closed for the season. More “bucket list” climbs, but not quite as good flatland type valley roads.

I’d go Girona. More interesting hire bikes from Service Course if you’re doing that too.

  • Ventoux, best left turn in the world and no stupid switchbacks.

  • Not been to Mallorca (well family hols but not cycling) so can't comment.

Been to Girona twice, once for road and once for gravel and it is superb. As matey boy up there says its a beautiful city in it's own right with plenty to see and do off the bike as well as restaurants, bike shops and pro-cyclists/ex-pro's by the bucket load. Took my non-cycling wife for the week and she had plenty to keep her busy. The riding is great, lots of climbs and a coastal route to die for too. Can share routes if you like.

Not been to Calpe but know friends that have been and they say it is great.

Done Ventoux too including the Cinglés and it is beautiful. Plenty of riding in the surrounding area too e.g. Les Gorges de la Nesque with picturesque tunnels through rock on the side of a gorge that you ride through for endless km's to keep you busy for a few days. Bedoin is fairly small but probably the best place to stay. Carpentras or Avignon is too far away unless you love pounding out big rides.

All the above should have decent weather in September.

  • Thank you for everyone’s response so far - Girona seems like a firm favourite here! We’d be planning it ourselves but that looks easy enough.
