  • Roadman voiceovers on Instagram is also kinda funny, that's not an old cyclist.

  • Thanks for the clarification, that's certainly interesting. I'll try it out on my 29 year old son who grew up in Bow E3.

I am increasingly aware that my use of language, which I thought was standard English, is becoming a dialect.

  • How? £1.50 a month??

  • that'll be about right. Not one bucket of boiling pitch amongst them!

  • Are you a member Skülly? I had wondered about joining Clarion as they are cheaper than CUK and there is an active chapter near me.

  • Yes, only passively. There’s a London group that was pretty quiet 10years ago, now pretty large, do lots of social rides, a camping weekend coming up… keep meaning to get more involved …

Have a referral link - no idea if it'll work for just Club Laka membership but worth a go.

  • I think @cliveo is a very active Clarion member.

  • BC coming up for renewal

Anyone used Laka for 3rd party ?

Would do cycling uk but a bit pricey most of what you pay for seems to be discounts on stuff I’ll never use

  • With Shell profit announcement today, we should be expecting some serious funding boost news from b.c. later, surely?

  • lol you new here?

  • Here we go:

    https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/about/article/20230504-about-bc-static-New-framework-introduced-to-unleash-new-generation-of-coaches-0

    For existing coaches:

We are looking in the future to move towards a continuing professional development model
where you may be required to undertake further training to stay valid.

Translated: we'll be charging you more to be able to coach.

I'm close to being done with it tbh.

  • To be fair, I'd want coaches to be relevant and up to date.

  • I've nothing against relevant cpd for coaches at the right levels at the right time. Mandated (and likely costly) cpd for all to stay 'valid' isn't the same as this.

I spent enough years as a full time coach being denied cpd that now I'm told will be compulsory when I only coach the fundamentals to folks a handful of times a year.

On top of the outlay to keep first aid & safeguarding up-to-date plus travel time & cost to get to & from sessions it'll likely overall cost me to coach which isn't sustainable long term on my current income.

  • The obvious consequence of this, outside of just being horrid and cruel to trans people, is that its going to invite hordes of transphobic gestapo wannabes down to the likes of hillingdon, Redbridge and herne hill velodrome where they'll spend the day screaming "trans! Trans! Check their genitals immediately!" at anyone whose appearance doesn't fit their stereotype.

Sounds far fetched? They're already doing it.

  • Grim. People are so foul.

Let’s all sit around at a safe distance and pontificate on the validity of other people’s lives. I’ve never given much thought to the integrity of women’s sports and now people in the pub garden are trying to bait me into condemning cyclists and weightlifters I’ve never heard of.

It’s not really good enough to say it’s not my fight though is it? An ally has to be proactive and it’s a duty to educate yourself.

Being trans isn’t doping. Doping is devious and a crime. Are we organising competition classes based on bone density growth during puberty to make a level field like weight classes in boxing and just calling them open and female now? Anyone can claim the science for their side I don’t know enough about anything.

Does it look a reasonable plan, on paper, in isolation from everything else? It’s toxic whatever they do it’s another missile in a constant volley of shit aimed at vulnerable people

I’ll fucking fight you if you say my friends aren’t who they say they are

  • The hard men are out this evening! I didn't realise that flat roof pubs had gardens.

  • I try and be aware of the challenges faced by minorities and there’s no way I can be aware of all of the unintended consequences of this decision but (on the face of it) it seems good that there is now clarity?

Sport is predicated on arbitrary restrictions by it’s nature. Any idea of ‘fair’ is a construct.

  • the nuremberg race laws "provided clarity" it doesn't mean they were good.

These aren't 'unintended consequences,' BC have decided to throw in with the hatemongering reactionaries to further marginalise trans people in society as a deliberate act.

  • Sport relies on agreement between participants on a set of simplistic rules. It’s not real life and it’s not society - thank goodness. It’s only going to exist if participants are ok with (basically) a tyranny of the majority.

If you know another way, let us know.

  • The amount of transphobic from Twitter, both people and those who races are insane.

  • If you know another way, let us know

Thundercrit among others have been doing it for years.

Maybe look in to the kinds of cycling communities that exist outside of the BC petrochemical sponsored shitshow? Crazy notion!

  • You can’t port that over to professional sport.

From my understanding is BC have provided clarity (and imperfect, temporary rules) until a legitimate alternative is developed. I really hope that’s the case.

  • Track league and women's league or derneyfest at hhv is not "professional sport."

For God's sake get an actual grip on what is happening here before you start endorsing people being denied participation in the stuff that in many cases is all they have to look forward to all week.
