Apparently it's the frame shape - the motor doesn't fit under or above the BB without some kind of banging about and welding:

I thought it was something to do with the shape of the frame around the bottom bracket, that it wouldn't be possible to install a Bafang because of it. YouTube not giving up any examples of installations. I've got a massive hangover now and can't think straight but later this week I'll take some pics of ours and if someone could draw where the Bafang would go on it I'd appreciate it. Without the frame being ground down or drilled. Where does the battery mount even?

Ah shit you might be right actually, it looks like a mid-drive motor probably isn't going to work.
Maybe my hastily-purchased Christiania wasn't the right bike.
