  • Sold a few bits of gear to get the Perkons, so far I've only scratched the surface but it's truly a deep instrument. It's doing a fair amount of melodic/bass in this little jam

    https://youtu.be/OWzXw33_hd8

  • Nice jam!

  • Thanks man, might do this as a full track

  • Post it up if you do

  • I'm just not doing anything with music these days, beyond listening to finished stuff. Is there any interest in a Roland TB-3 and/or a Akai MPK Mini keyboard/pad controller thingamie? Both in good condition and only driven into overdrive on Sundays by a little old lady.

  • This looks like a cool little (well, not that little) device: https://www.musicradar.com/news/polyend-tracker-mini

Trackers aren't really my cup of tea but it'll be interesting to see how it fares against the M8.

  • The TB-3 looks fun. I don't need it but how much are you looking for it (out of interest...).

  • I normally have a look at ebay sales and stick it below an obvious average if there is one. Looks pretty random and they've sold anywhere from 88 to 200 quidz so something like 120 I reckon.

  • Seems like a decent price

  • What's the quickest, free way to stick audio onto a streaming site?
Convert mp3 to mp4 for youtube? I think soundcloud would be good but it's got a shit low upload limit. Mixcloud?

If I was going to upload to YT, what's the best (smallest) video format if it's just a static pic that doesn't also mess with the audio?

  • Hello all
As a dyed-in-the-wool vinyl tosspot, I'm trying to find a digital copy of a track from Some Great Reward by Depeche Mode from 1984. Does any kind soul here have the CD / WAVs of it they'd not mind sharing? Only really want one track but the others could be useful. I have this on record so I wouldn't feel too bad that I'm not paying Mode for it...

  • FLAC download listed here, not sure if super spammy or not

    https://archive.org/details/depeche.-mode-some.-great.-reward.-2006.-sacd

  • Would ripping it from vinyl not be good enough? 🤔

  • Ah cheers J!! Ledge.

Lining up a live mix hopefully for June BTDT radio. Look forward to hearing what you come up with, but def want to keep it live every other or more

  • Probly fine. But wanted to try getting a file for a specific purpose not just playback.

Just found a midi file of it made by someone called something Gorbachev! hah

  • No0b question. What's the deal with using samples on your tracks these days? When I was a lad you could sample what you wanted and release it with impunity cuz nobody gave a shit.

I've used the Billie Jean drums on a track (with other drums under/over it), could that be a problem down the road? I will chuck it up on SoundCloud and could possibly press a little 45 all going well. It's gonna definitely get played on the radio so that's my main concern.

Filter the fuck out of it? Drop it and recreate it? Credit it? What are my options?

  • It’s Michael jackson. His estate may well be snarky about it even though he’s been dead a while…
Get clearance from Prs detail below… good luck.

  • Thanks! 🙃

  • Might be Quincy Jones for the drums & bass as he produced Thriller. He had a fairly widely publicised case fighting the remastering of that album a few years ago. He's recently defended MJ against claims that the Billie Jean bassline is sampled from Donna Summer - State Of Independence.

In fairness if you're using that sample and you get traction with a hit you will probably get taken for every penny you might earn from it in perpetuity. Worth looking at The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony case, they have only recently been granted license by The Stones to profit from that track (not historically) and the sample they used was from an orchestral version of a Stones hit.

If you want to do a deal with the owners you should do it before release and there would need to be massive upside for the owners to even discuss it with you since they can wait for you to release it and sue you for the money if you have a worldwide hit.

For anyone who doesn't know much about Quincy Jones it's worth finding out about him. Frank Sinatra gave him his pinky ring.

  • Yeah, I'm aware of The Verve case, the Loog made them pay alright. I'm still amazed they released that record without clearing that particular sample, it was so obvious at the time and everyone was aware of the law wrt overt sampling by then.

I'm using the BJ loop in the background under another kit, it isn't obvious at all. I'll play it to a few people when it's finished and see what they think.

It isn't gonna be a worldwide hit anyway, no one will care. 🤣

  • If it’s so buried, why not record an approximation that doesn’t have 5 consecutive notes or whatever the rule is? Unless the sample is a sort of Easter egg that’s satisfying to hide in there, which I would get

  • I'm not a lawyer obviously but I think sampled drums are a bit safer than sampled melodies / chords.

I was using some Native Instruments sample packs at the weekend and I noticed a load of very obvious drum samples - the Amen snare was throughout it - and NI sell those samples as an original production pack!

MJ is a spicy meatball to try that on though. Safest thing would be to remove/recreate it if you can do it without it messing up the sound.

  • I'll post a couple of loops later showing you how I've used it and you guys can tell me what you reckon. 👨‍⚖️

I've actually used it a few times as a background groove on this electronic project I'm doing. It'll be easy enough to use a super-obscure disco loop in its place anyway.

  • bit of an open-ended hive mind query, but here's my problem: 2017-ish Macbook Pro is on the way out. A bunch of software quirks that took some wrangling to regain Finder functionality, then the screen is now snapping off by the hinge.

I mainly record one instrument at a time with a Scarlett 2Pre Thunderbolt (1), but I want to keep the option of running 2 mics at once to record piano etc.

13inch macbook pro (limited to 2x thunderbolt 4 ports, but £1000 cheaper), or 14 inch (more ports though still have to use adapters, more powerful etc and only just released)?

  • don't say 'dont get a mac', I'm decades deep at this point
