Cam or crank position sensor is my bet.
The ECU won't know (due to the sensor being on the blink) when to fire the spark plugs.
Eventually the sensor gives enough info for the ECU to take a stab at it, but then it drops out again and the ECU stops firing.
Or, demonic possession.
