  • And of course the one nearly everybody in the West gets wrong🙂
    Владимир
    Володя
    Вова

  • I hate it when that happens

  • Владимир Fett?

  • Frenchies are pretty basic
    'Wawa' Warren Barguil
    'Jaja' Julien Alaphillipe

  • Jaja

They're just laughing at him in Spanish.

  • Jeff for Jean-François Bernard is a little more imaginative

  • In the way that foreign languages, such as French, have adopted modern invented English language words such as l’Internet, are there modern foreign language words that have entered common English parlance? Obviously there are many historical examples such as je ne sais quois but are there any modern technological examples? Not only looking for French language

  • Pecha kucha?
Which most people say with emphasis on first syllable of each word, but I think it's meant to be even across all four syllables. It means "chit-chat" in Japanese so maybe it doesn't count as an example since it means something else in English.

  • Just add -ito and -ita in Spanish.

There are more complicated options, too. Here's a list.

  • Do other countries apart from English speaking ones have basic nicknames like Tommo, Jonno, Smithy, Nashy etc?

In Germany it's common to shorten / add an i at the end, like
    Michael > Michi
    Andreas > Andi
    Susan > Susi
    Franziska > Franzi

  • Pokémon.

Animé and manga, and I guess hentai and some other pron words from Japan.

  • Does Umami count?

  • are there modern foreign language words that have entered common English parlance?

Depends what you mean by "modern", "foreign", "English" and "common" 🙂

The one which comes to mind as being unambiguously modern, foreign, common, in the field of technology and used in all Englishes is robot

  • feng shui

  • Thanks all

  • reconnaissance

  • reconnaissance

Modern only in the sense of post-1500, as it came into common English usage around the time of the Napoleonic wars

  • Dérailleur is about a decade newer than robot, although only an Anglish purist would consider that the import of French words into English qualifies as foreign

  • Nouns are cheating

  • Pokémon is a portmanteau of Pocket Monsters, which was already trademarked in the west and thus couldn’t be used for the brand.

  • Robota = work, in any of the Slavonic languages.

  • Mata-mata, meaning police, Malay origin.

  • All of the annoying Americanisms, they're basically loanwords in the UK right?

  • robot

Had no idea that was foreign!

  • That's a good one. I'll accept this and Animé
