Agree, you'll take more pictures if you carry a compact vs (d)SLR. Although the Canon 40mm pancake (or any other pancake) will give you a reduction in size with a very sharp image.
on the flip-screen side you might find older gens of the Canon G7 X p.e. you might find around that price range in 2nd hand market.
Personally, I don't leave my compact at home... love it.
