so they always need a few K extra
45% of £12570 (for 2022/23) would be £5656.50

I think it is this.
It was an issue while I was tapering. But now the tapering is all done hopefully it will iron out -

You can always speak to HMRC and get them to give you a more appropriate tax code. But if you're not stupidly far into the additional rate (#firstworldproblems) you should be diverting more to your pension otherwise it's just giving HMRC free money.
Probably IFA time.

Have you put your salary into one of the myriad online tax calculators to check that you are paying the correct amount each month / payslip?

Just got letter from hmrc saying I owe them £50. I changed jobs mid April 2022, the top line here is last payment from my old job, surely it was on them to have paid Tax on my salary?

Not if they weren't expecting your total to exceed your allowance. What was the period for that £1285? Five weeks or more and you'd have had no PAYE liability on that pay rate.
Anyway, I'm guessing HMRC have done the calculation properly, they can collect it by changing your code for such a small amount, but it's probably easier to just send them the £50

About 3.5wks. Probably explains it. Bottom of letter mentions they'll adjust my code so no further action needed. I'll take that option everyday.

22/23 tax return almost done, just need to check a couple of things and I can pay the bill. Positively early this year.
Don't forget to claim for WFH if you still do that: https://www.gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees/working-at-home
Tax relief on £312

Just had a look at my payslip for August and my tax code has changed to 1551L from 1257L in July. The HMRC app says its change due to Personal Pension Payments, never had that before and I've been paying in a private pension for years.
Does help that I can't find anything on HMRC website and got board of the 50 minute wait time on the phone , anyone else have a sudden change?
Happy that it favours me, but wary of HMRC changes.

That's normal, at least it was for me. Are you a higher rate tax payer, and have you recently submitted a self assessment where you declared your personal pension contributions?
-
• #812
I'am and I have, although the figure I can see in the app for the PPC doesn't match what is on my self assessment.

If you log in to Government Gateway you can check your PAYE tax code details here: https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/check-income-tax/detailed-income-tax-estimate
This will give you the breakdown.
HMRC might be doing that thing where they extrapolate figures across 12 months, assuming your situation will stay the same for the whole tax year.

any dual nationality people here have any experience of make a disclosure using the Worldwide Disclosure Facility ?

I've never claimed employment expenses (for a PAYE job) on my tax return before. I think I can claim for a 'professional subscription' and a trade union, both are on the approved list. Is it as straightforward as that? Do you put the name of the expenses in the more info box?

all done!

5 months ago I said:

Still haven't checked the final couple of things (at least I have all of the info I need) and so it remains unsubmitted...

I hate when this thread gets bumped, unless its me who is bumping it with complete returns 😂

I appreciate the reminder, although I've been getting enough direct from HRMC...

Yeah my accountants done mine and sent me a lovely bill too for it.

Did mine in Nov. Got a new emergency tax code - I think because of the timing of submitting near the end of the month (rookie error) - and had all the money taken. Then a new incorrect tax code to replace the emergency one and all the money taken again in Jan. Have spoken to a helpful person at HMRC so I hope it'll reappear in Feb.

Submitted and paid.
Mrs GB earned more than me in 2023/24 so she'll have to deal with the HICBC next year (although we'll switch the regular charitable donations to be in her name to offset a chunk of it).

Ha, I did my first return this year so read through the thread a bit and did see this, so got inspired to get as far as I could with next years, (like a spreadsheet Sam).... and now you say this is how it ends , lol

I’ve not been asked to do a self assessment this year. Previously I had so assumed I’d just missed reminders.
Ran through it and it calculated I owe ~£900, which it’d want paying today. If I choose not to submit the (voluntary) self assessment then presumably they’ll just adjust my tax code next year rather than me not having to pay the £900 at all…?

They can definitely take £900 through changing your code, but it depends on their knowing about all the income which gives rise to the £900 liability. The only income they really know about without your filing a return is PAYE employment income.
This is normal I think - I have a suspicion the tax code doesn't deal with the taper of personal allowance properly, so they always need a few K extra. Could that be the issue?
