  • I won't show you the drawer with ipads in then :P when wfh I put it away in the morning then take it out before I leave to pick her up. We clean it down after each meal (surely everyone does that?). It's a case of picking it up and walking 10 steps or so into the playroom and popping it in the cupboard. A key part of the renovation was as much built in storage as possible, this means very little has to be out and things have designated spaces.

  • We went with Chauncey in the end - Dinesen were too expensive for the amount of flooring we were looking at. We rejected the initial samples and they came back with much nicer stain/wash. Dinesen seem to either get first pick or have their own timber so they get that totally pure grain. The Chauncey boards have slightly more knots but we were mostly able to hide these or arrange for alternate boards to be sent

  • Dinesen came out at about £185/ sq m for what I priced up. Do you mind sharing what the rough cost was with Chauncey?

  • surely everyone does that?

In between the screaming fit and throwing food at the wall? Nope.

  • Nope.

    Snap.

  • Altho we're past that stage now.

It just seems such a short period when they're using a high chair anyway, I wasn't too fussed.

If we'd just done the place up, we may feel different.

  • @Tenderloin How do you survive with an actual cloth tablecloth? Don’t you have to wash it every night after everyone dribbles their pasta sauce all over the place?

  • Is that a picture or a Frame TV?

  • analogue

  • Placemats and usually change once a week or so.

  • surely everyone does that?

  • So I’ve been thinking a bit about a business I would like to exist. Mybuilder and checkatrade suck because from my experience you get really varied quality and pricing. Reviews aren’t a good sense check bc a lot of people will get good reviews for doing things cheap or quick or for small unrelated jobs.

My basic idea is a membership/concierge site, which gives you access to member vetted and reviewed trades. In order to be on the site you have to have been recommended and reviewed by a member and also have your last X jobs reviewed (we’d visit or call the customers).

For trades the marketplace businesses are a pain bc they’re having to chase leads and quote for work which is often heavily price or time sensitive. I think that it would be focussing on quality and so hopefully remove some of these challenges. I’m not sure how to solve for time other than a calendar integration.

It’s definitely a service I would use - but I know that’s not necessarily a great yardstick. I also know that it would not be applicable for everyone. But thought I’d crowd source some thoughts here

  • I can think of so many reasons why it won't work but it's a desirable service.

  • Good idea but it wouldnt work because of too many things.

  • Is this where to ask about blinds for bifold doors - has anyone got them? Is the standard blinds2go option the best? Doors are wood and I worry they might not look great, but I think I need some for extra utility in the room…

  • @Airhead @konastab01 from both sides? Any starters as to why? I think from the consumer side it would work, so interested to know why you think it wouldn't (this is my obvious blindspot!)

  • Could you have the blinds down with the doors open or would that hit into each other? or do you mean the blinds attached to the doors?

  • JEZUS FUCKING CHRIST.
It's not is it? How can people be so bland?

@Tenderloin yeah know what you mean business wise, kinda this forum in a way. Need to find good people who match your aesthetic.

  • well GOOD FUCKING LUCK

  • Oh yeah, and on budget, so yeah no fucking luck.

  • I was looking at the blinds that attach to doors as it’s for a garden room and i don’t think it would be easy / it might mess up all the nice ply joinery to attach blinds anywhere else

  • I mean, you could pay me to tell you 🤪

You will struggle to find reliable trades in the quantity you need and even if you did, you will likely struggle to manage the relationship between client and trades as they will not be the same as you. Then you're on the hook for the clients perceptions etc.

You will also be adding to the cost of the process which no one wants so you'll have to protect your contacts in a way that doesn't suit the trade or the client.

I've got loads of reasons but the other thing to consider is a lot of people already do this kind of thing in an informal way. I've never had a business card or advertised, all my work comes through references.

  • drawings from structural engineer. Things starting to progress!

  • The key question is how much of a premium would customers pay for a tradesman from this over and above the market rate?

Is that premium then enough to pay for the additional costs required to run it - of which the largest is most likely marketing, but also the vetting / reviewing, and overheads?
