So I’ve been thinking a bit about a business I would like to exist. Mybuilder and checkatrade suck because from my experience you get really varied quality and pricing. Reviews aren’t a good sense check bc a lot of people will get good reviews for doing things cheap or quick or for small unrelated jobs.
My basic idea is a membership/concierge site, which gives you access to member vetted and reviewed trades. In order to be on the site you have to have been recommended and reviewed by a member and also have your last X jobs reviewed (we’d visit or call the customers).
For trades the marketplace businesses are a pain bc they’re having to chase leads and quote for work which is often heavily price or time sensitive. I think that it would be focussing on quality and so hopefully remove some of these challenges. I’m not sure how to solve for time other than a calendar integration.
It’s definitely a service I would use - but I know that’s not necessarily a great yardstick. I also know that it would not be applicable for everyone. But thought I’d crowd source some thoughts here
The key question is how much of a premium would customers pay for a tradesman from this over and above the market rate?
Is that premium then enough to pay for the additional costs required to run it - of which the largest is most likely marketing, but also the vetting / reviewing, and overheads?
