  • Thanks! It’s my least ridden but most admired bike :-D

I need to get back in to shape and get it to Newport again at some point

  • Still dicking around with this. Waiting for a disc bolt cog to arrive so I can ride it fixed, in the absence of reverse threads. Took the carbon death bars off (to find they’d crimped, despite being properly torqued) and whacked some OG V2s on, with some death grips.

Just waiting on a brake now, really.

Still think I might end up finding some similar risers to the carbon ones - but in metal.

  • Rather like this, looks like a good laugh.

  • looks like a lot of fun.

  • Cheers! I’m desperate to get out on it now. Cog will probably turn up just in time for me to go away for the weekend and not get a ride in.

Just found this in a drawer :-D
Might have to go on the basket bag I got to go in the rockhoppers basket

  • Cog arrived. A very cursory clean up of the hub and on it goes…

  • Looking good! OG V2s a solid choice for this.

  • Who made this?

  • Put a brake on. Couldn’t get it not to slightly scuff on the rotor no mater how hard I tried. Test rode round the block anyway. Ever so slightly adjusted bars. Fun!
Can’t wait to get it dirty.

  • that looks mega. hopefully the brake rub will ease off after a couple of hard brakings.
    lovely doggo.

  • Looks very fun! Some hydros run the pads super close together - I’m sure it’ll sort itself out!

  • Quick shakedown ride. Still can’t really tell if the gearing is a little high or not (44x19 currently). It probably is.
Brake needs new pads, which I knew. I ended up barely using it.
I probably either need to put on some bars with less backsweep, or use a seatpost with layback.

It feels fun, though! Did some skids, did some forgetting I was fixed and being bumped out of the saddle. Fun!

  • Yeah I ended up ditching trying to centre them by pulling the lever and then tightening. Discovered that putting the bike upside down and spinning the wheel, then tweaking the calliper yields pretty good results!

@bigshape he’s a good boy! 3 years old and will probably be a puppy for another 3

  • Looks like so much fun! It's making me want to ditch the mudguards on my Pomp so that I can go and fuck about in the woods.

  • Come for the bike, stay for Odie.

  • Now I do like your day one, I’m regretting not buying my friends one now, do you think you’d get away with 650bs in there? (All my nice wheels are 650b)

  • Ah, I know the answer to this - I tried it with my CDF (which has exactly the same clearance, being the same frame!).

I managed to get 47mm wtb senderos in, but with only a mm or two either side. I’ll dig out the post in this thread with a photo.

If the crimp was extended down the chainstay a bit, it’d be fine. I was tempted to have it done but never got round to it.

    Edit: here you go

  • Damn, those are the tyres I was thinking as well! Thanks for trying so that I don’t have to.

  • I very nearly bothered getting the frame mod, but I decided it just wasn’t that useful to me (in fact I’ve got the wheels for sale now)

  • Did some errands on the rockhopper today. First time I’d had it out for a while and I’d forgot how nice it is to cruise around on.

I’d put some semi-modern hollowtech cranks on it but actually looking back at when I had those nice XT cranks I think it was a mistake selling them!

  • In Day One news - the brake I initially put on was next to useless (assume pads) but I tried a different brake with almost new pads today and the braking is still terrible. Rotors?
I’ll pop another rotor on and see if that improves things.

It made me realise how bad it was when I rode the rockhopper just afterwards and the cantis felt really snappy and powerful in comparison 😬

  • I’ve been mucking around with the idea of getting either my CdF or the Day One powder coated and then doing some decals for it. It will probably never actually come to fruition, but I’ve been doodling some replacement graphics, with the idea of getting them cut from vinyl in a fun colour.
