  • Totally understand this. Even the 2nd hand/reseller market is super frustrating at times.

  • Of course HMV will never want to be out done on vinyl taxes

    https://hmv.com/store/music/vinyl/workin-with-the-miles-davis-quintet-(1)

  • I got a box set of Workin', Steamin', Relaxin', Walkin' and Cookin' for about the same price as that. And to my peasant ears, it sounds bloody fine.

  • Oh yeah, reminds me I have an outstanding order with HMV from March... :(

  • I ordered an LP from them ages ago, forgot about it until they offered me a refund almost a year later because they never got it in stock (it was supposedly in stock when ordered).

But the free postage is good, right?

  • The high quality vinyl reissue market has been suffering because major labels are now reluctant to license the really big titles to the specialist labels because they can press them themselves. The specialists are also competing for pressing 'time' with majors who suddenly want 1/2 million Taylor Swift albums pressed and at the same time the major producer of acetate disks burnt to the ground.

Consequence of all this and material price increases has been a big increase in prices and a dip in quality. I've been slowing down on buying new for months now.

  • I stick (mostly) to the bargain bins. One man’s poison…

  • How’d that reggae haul turn out?

  • Theres a lot of heat in there

  • Might be a stretch but does anyone have a recommendations they'd be happy to share for where to go digging in SE for Hip Hop and Rap (without getting fully pantsed)? Or is getting pantsed an inevitability?

  • I can't believe there are many havens for grabbing bargains anymore.

@jono84 was trying looking to offload some hip hop a few months ago, not sure if he ever did (still interested in grabbing illmatic if you are Jono!)

  • I think now rat records is gone, there aren’t many place left in London where the vinyl is prices to move. Sometimes you might come up at Lorenzos (records wanted) or sugar hill cafe in SE.

  • Bootfairs at <6am. You get to say hello to all your favourite dealers buying all their stock for the week too.

  • Yeah that's what I assumed was the case. Thanks for the tips though. Yeah I've ridden past SugaHill cafe loads of times, great shout thanks!

  • I was but didn't have the time to sort stuff and have since changed my mind. Wu saga and upgrading my hifi may have had something to do with the change of heart...

@monkdagola what era are you interested in? I'm SE and may still think about shifting a few albums.

  • Is anyone increasing their Discogs inventory prices due to the selling fee being raised, and if so by what percent? I don't really want to get involved with increasing postage prices (which also have raised fees) but am considering adding a percentage to my stock, just not sure by how much.

  • I just added 10% to my postage as that's where there will be 9% extra in fees. The 1% on stock I'll probably swallow for now.

  • Thanks. I didn't realise it worked like that. My postage rates are pretty low so i'll address that.

  • Previously they weren't charging fees on the postage price at all. I'm not happy about it but every successful online marketplace has done the same thing over time.

  • I've found an old pickering xv-15 (I think) cartridge with a broken needle.
I probably hasn't been used since the 80ies and I don't know under what conditions it has been stored.
Is it likely to be fucked from corrosion internally? Is it worth it to try an find a replacement (aftermarket) stylus? Where from?

  • Oh wow, they did finally open up registration for vinylengine.com again I see 🙂

  • Thanks.
    Now to choose between styli...
That's hard when you cant listen to compare.
Do I just go for cheapest spherical or would I appreciate an elliptic? Whatever I buy, I'll never know how the other one sounded anyway.

  • In my experience the more complex shapes are better. It takes a while before you hear the limits of a stylus but you can always get a test record to check the eq.

  • There's not many, but a few youTube comparisons, where you can get a bit of an idea ..

..I found these two to be helpful for example (probably best to listen to these with good headphones on) -
