  • I did old roads as a perm starting at 9pm such a good ride. By myself, going though Exmoor singing out loud to keep my moral up.

I also rang my wife at 5am. I told her about this weird place that makes everything from cheese. In her tired state she was confused. I told her about the shops, cheddar tyres, cheddar furniture etc. honestly I don’t know how I’m still married after 18 years.

(can someone plz add it to a list I am formatting illiterate thank you)

  • Cool. Let’s stop there. Will pm the list tomorrow when at a computer. ✌️

  • Well done to all who rode, finished or DNFed Fast Times in the High Weald on Saturday. The second year of the event will be remembered for the weather going from OK to ...very much worse over the course of the day.

    A few photos below courtesy of @ad441 - https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipNIOcP7rhQAYeoh9TOEfFJZcFwYGZj3MgH_5CWl8L4ILWxAWdc564Fn6pc8cS9-uw?key=UkVkc0xCdmJfanZkWGVHLXhyWmpDRTg0YjZFV0pn

We'll be back in 2024 and the weather will be better, alongside hopefully another (flatter) 200 and a 300.

  • (photos unedited due to lack of time/laziness, so half of them are of my dog)

  • I remember catching a downpour last year just after the halfway mark but mercifully it cleared quickly! Hard enough as it is without having to fight the elements all day :S

Great pics (particularly of doggo), will hopefully ride it next year. Look forward to hearing more deets on the other rides.

  • Same. I did my usual trick of leaving a roof and then waiting until I was soaked through before going "oh yeah, probably could've put on a rain jacket"

    Merak

Can I bring up the rear as it were?

  • @Merak I think he called it after Amcharl - he might have an administrative aneurysm if he keeps going

  • As I looked out from the warmth of my home [chiro has sworn me off any proper riding] I did look back on that torrential section through the forest after Battle and think "I'm so glad it wasn't like this"

  • You can have one of mine.

  • Ada was the star of the show on Saturday. Thank you for the morale boost at checkpoint 1 :)

  • Glad she helped. Was a little worried she'd annoy people by licking their bare legs, but figured the one time there was a dog at an audax control when I was riding it really cheered me up.

Well done to anyone that rode it on Saturday. I did it the previous week in good weather and it was still pretty miserable with the relentless climbing.

The final DNS/DNF rate was as high as would be expected.

  • This year a huge majority of the DNFs were at Battle, which was sensible given the 40km across to Uckfield can often feel like the most challenging part of the ride.

  • 🙏👍👌

  • Damn, too late to the patch party. Running out space on the top tube bag anyway.

Anyone else signed up for Bryan chapman memorial this year? Just been handed a 4am start time 😬

  • 4am

    Ouch. Pass.

  • I can confirm that it was hard work.

  • Just been handed a 4am start time

Yikes - how do you get that to work? Do you sleep in the hall beforehand?

I've got a very civilised 10am start for a 400 this weekend. Will be riding through the night, though - but at least the logistics are easy.

  • Assuming they're doing this so the quicker riders might be tempted to bounce Kings entirely and sleep at the next control with the air beds, assuming they're still running that one?

Relieving some of the logjam at Kings would definitely be a good thing.

  • I've got a 6am start, any improvement at Kings will be great, hopefully they haven't got a bigger field relying on this and it's even worse than before, you can't rely on tired people doing what you think they will, all it takes is rain or cold and everyone will stop at the first opportunity.

  • It makes sense from that point of view, maybe even just getting a first lot of people through kings before the later wave comes. I recall people having to wait an hour or more for a bed to come free in the past so I can see how this could help.
I was just trying to understand how getting to the start for 4am works.
