Nice write-up, you summed it up very well!
I got the 'too early' on the eBrevet thing at St Ives too. I knew I wasn't as our average speed was 25km, not 30. The organiser said at the end that he had put the wrong time in.
The multiple gates round Rutland Water were hell on the tandem, as mounting and dismounting got progressively more difficult for my stoker as he tired. Pedestrians held two of them open for us which was a big help.

Work on your tandem bunnyhop...

I might do Jelly Fish Legs 400 on 13th May if anyones keen. Start at 10am. Trains are £30 return from london. Same org as Midnight Express.

I've signed up for this. There train strikes on that Friday and Saturday though? I might have to ride up on Friday and stay with Stevenage friend.

I've booked my first calendar event for the end of May: The Broadsman. Looking forward to it!

We had a similar tandem multiple leap off/ manoeuvre round/ leap on near the start of the Lincolnshire Poacher 400 on the weekend. Happily that won’t be needed at PBP.

Be very careful - you know where this might lead!
You think that it's only 100km, you'll be able to control it, but it's a very slippery slope...

😁
I think my legs will be the limiting factor. I can't see anything above a 200k tbh. -

The thing is, if you can do a 200km you can do a 300km, it's only 60 more miles!

And if you can do 300k you can do 400k, it’s only ~60miles more.

And before you know it you've hardly slept in 4 days and you're eating cold beans out of a can in a garage forecourt wondering what the smell is (it's you).

Just posted in the jobs page about a paid ride leading gig tomorrow and Saturday if anyone is interested...

Garage forecourts are one of the best parts of audax imo. Not really sure why.
Also, the holy grail is M&S garage I reckon.

Not really sure why.
It’s the petrol fumes.

Hard agree. Oakham one on Saturday was sublime and had an extensive chocolate milk selection.

It’s the garages with a Greggs that do it for me. That and Co-ops that stock Vego bars.
-
• #12420
Closely followed by a Co-op food. There's a basic pasta salad with tomatoes that I'll happily eat for every single 'grab and go' stop on a long audax.
-
• #12421
When you start doing this on "normal" rides, where most would stop for a coffee stop, you prefer to raid a garage or co-op.
-
• #12422
I prefer to be faster and then have a 3-course meal at every control.

• #12423
Full Value Audax. I'm with you on that. Ride hard, eat well.

Ride dumb
Eat crap
Bonk wheneverThat's how I roll anyway

To be fair, these days as I'm doing AAA rides, I don't have as much time to eat and big meals are counter-productive when you have 25% climbs out of controls.
On the flatter rides, back in the old days, we had heaps of time so would often do a pub lunch.
Anyone done the Old 240 in the past or looking at doing it on the 20th?
