  • Cheers

Edit: 40 pages! Fuck. There's my evening sorted.

  • Aye you need to save it up that's what we do or else it would be pointless.

  • There are only about 4 relevant pages

  • I stripped a bunch of copper cable a couple of years ago. Finally got around to taking it to the local scrap dealer and I'm now 87p richer.

  • Who is the forum approved cork-floor company? I’ve been trawling back through the pages but can’t find it

  • Colourflooring company still I would guess

  • ;)

  • Hope so based on the boxes that arrived for me last week..

  • Couple of quid there easily

  • Never sat out for more than half a day.

    It's mad that, isn't it?

  • I saw one guy lifting stuff and ran out with some more bits for him. I think he thought I was going to have a go at him, not "here, please take my shit so I don't have to drive to the tip".

  • Small fry compared to what the gaffers get. At least 5 grand there - they even bought a stripping machine for it.

Not just have a wee bonfire in the carpark? Probably LSF anyway

  • Digging on the play area in the back garden starts tomorrow. Digging down to 200mm, levelling with sand, membrane then 150mm of softwood chips.

Question I have is how to fix the playset (this thing). It comes with 30cm metal ground anchors which I can set into the earth but I don't just want to leave soil at the top level and dig a 'moat' around it that I fill with chips as the ground will shift with the weight.

Burying the thing by anchoring it 15cm into the ground will mean the base will rot in the chips if water can't shift and it'll also mean the slide will have to finish below ground level by the same amount.

I was thinking of using some treated sleepers (100mm high) to create a square underneath the frame. Anchor that to the ground then anchor the frame onto that. Worst case, I can replace the sleepers every few years if they rot.

    Any other ideas?

  • Digging down to 200m

    'kin 'ell!

  • Mineral rights...

  • treated sleepers (100m high)

    'faaaack

    etc.

  • Amazing, thanks!

  • ffs. iOS autocorrect gets worse and worse

  • The sleepers would have more surface area in contact with the rotty stuff. Can you do piers/pillars instead? Would allow for extra airflow underneath the structure.

Sink four 4'x4' posts 2' into the gound that only come up to just above the surface of the chips and build off those. Postcrete is very easy to use and would be more than enough for that thing.

  • I have this coming next week for mini_com's birthday, with platform, without slide. I have a wellbeing day off work on Friday to build it. I will just be settling and levelling four of these to go under the feet. And probably treat the bases of each of the legs for good measure.

  • Scrappies don’t take burned cable, and LSF/LSX isn’t worth stripping. Those big armoureds will have at least 5kg of copper per length and only take a couple mins to strip. Some of them are 240mm singles!

  • That's a good shout.

I'm suggesting sleepers as I'll have some offcuts that would work. I'm adding another layer to my existing raised bed to put some of the waste soil in so didn't just want to skip them.

It comes with these ground anchors so I can just use those on the sleepers without concreting in then use L brackets / screws to secure the base to the sleepers.

  • I imagine those stakes are for tip over prevention in high winds. Or particularly boisterous weins hooning about the upper level. Either way, I'm not sure how much I'd trust a foot of straight re-bar into soft soil to hold it down. Unless it's in a sheltered area, that might be a concern still if nothing is properly anchored. But, the sleepers might lower the centre of gravity enough, depending how much is used. I am no structural engineer so completely guessing and usually end up over building things. I'm banking on mine being in a sheltered spot with some extra beefing up of the platform/frame to do the same.

  • I think the soil starts to solidify around 250mm down so it should be pretty sturdy.

    Jobs list is currently:

    1. Add 1 height of sleepers to bed
    2. Mark out play area
    3. Remove / skip turf
    4. Remove top soil to bed being full
    5. Skip the rest down to 200mm
    6. Level off with sand / membrane
    7. Fit a base of some sort - by this point, I should have a really good idea of how solid the ground is / how wet the soil was etc to make a call
    8. Build play thing
    9. Fill the rest with chips
    10. Lie down

Better than watching some rich cunt get his ceremonial hat though.
