Random googling gives stainless steel prices around 70p/kg (unless it's 316 marine grade then it's ~£1.70/kg) and non-stainless steel about 22p/kg.
It's got to be a pretty heavy lump for it to be worth driving out for. 20kg of "heavy steel" would only be worth ~£4.
I stripped a bunch of copper cable a couple of years ago. Finally got around to taking it to the local scrap dealer and I'm now 87p richer.
