Ha, I’m a subcontractor now, the only thing on my highlight reel is my pay check.

Squatting and keeling at odd angles can also fuck off
speaking off, anyone have recommendations for decent knee pads for diy. I can manage about 5 seconds of kneeling and they're something I always promise myself I'll pick up so the next time I'm working on something low down it isn't excruciating and then I immediately forget about it.

Snickers knee pads always get recommended.
I haven't tried them, my work overalls have some old carpet underlay in them, and then if I'm planning to be kneeling loads I use some cheapo ones.
Got to say the difference between my DIY underlay ones vs nothing is huge - so if you're worried about price or will procraste I'd say buy anything, itll be better than nothing.

Really lo-tech print and cut the hole outer offset is 2mm for tollerance.

Currently have Ikea Pax in an alcove in the kid's room, and want to fill the rest of the gap between wardrobe and wall with open shelves - so one side secured to wall, the other to the wardrobe. Gasp/spam is about 40cm.
Best plan of action? Doesn't need to be beautiful - battens screwed to each side as the support?

Redbacks inserts are my favourite by a mile
-
• #40384
Yes. But you'll need to make sure the Pax is properly fixed to the wall and when you do make sure it's straight - otherwise it'll have a knock-on effect to the shelves.

Does this look like the cistern water level is too low? Should it be at the (what I think is a) 6L line?
How would I adjust this so it fills fully?

Does it adequately flush your deposits? If so, then the water level is fine.

It’s that plastic nob, but they do have a habit of snapping if they are old.I’m guess it’s not clearing or you wouldn’t be looking at the water level. Sometimes they stick and don’t fully fill no matter how the valve is adjusted, squirting a bit of limescale remover about may work.

There's an issue with it draining which is why I started poking around.
So I guess the flush is ok but I figured I'd try and soup it up if I could while I was looking. I'm going to run some cleaner and descaler or something through it at some point. Need to find dunny specific stuff.

Cheers. The issue is downstream but I figured I'd look at the cistern anyway.

I wanted to run an ethernet cable from the house to our sheds at some point.
We're having our patio done and it occurred to me that I could run a tube with some string in it the ~8.5m from where it'd likely come out of the house to where it'll go into a shed.
Question: What pipe would I use? I'd think I could use any thin diameter pvc pipe.
I don't really want to lay an external grade ethernet as idk yet how I will connect it all, so really just want to create the options now.

BT have several underground ducts and experience with them in the long term. They use 54mm PVC pipe and preformed bends.

I use a gardening mat for that as I dont like knee pads but if you have to get knee pads my mate loves the mcapline ones https://mcalpinekneepads.com
Id like the matt but its £60 in the merchants.

Ta! Yep, have used off-cuts of skirting so that they fit square against the wall where they get secured inside at the top (and so i don't need to hack away at the bottom where the skirting protrudes.

Getting rid of scrap metal (steel, specifically) - Am I being ridiculous in thinking that it's not something you'd expect to pay much for?
Given that people just drive around looking for it to chuck in the back of their vans.

Scrap metal pays for its own uplift. If you’re in London I’ve got a guy, total ledge actually.

You shouldn't have to pay for that. I mean you could take it yourself to a scrappys if you wanted.
-
• #40399
I just leave metal out front, maybe with a sign saying "scrap" if it's not obvious. Never sat out for more than half a day.

Random googling gives stainless steel prices around 70p/kg (unless it's 316 marine grade then it's ~£1.70/kg) and non-stainless steel about 22p/kg.
It's got to be a pretty heavy lump for it to be worth driving out for. 20kg of "heavy steel" would only be worth ~£4.
You get better and more efficient if working a physical job full time, but first 3 weeks are like hitting a brick wall, even 6 hours hard work 5 days a week will totally wipe out most people.
