Brompton bike mech in central london, looking for ones recomended or to avoid. This is to replace a 3-spd hub with 5 and bottom bracket

5 speed hubs are REALLY temperamental.
BB job is simple.
Brixton Cycles, Compton Cycles, BikeFix, in no particular order.
FWIW, it's much easier and more economical to go 6 speed if your existing 3 speed is fine.

Thanks for that tip on the 5 speed , I’d assumed being a hub it would be more robust than throwing a derailleur on. Is the Alfine 8 reliable?
-
• #13405
Yes but you’d need an aftermarket rear triangle. If you have the stock triangle it’s 120mm wide at the dropouts, most non-Brompton hubs are 130 or 135mm, of which alfine is.
It sounds like you just have a stock 3speed bromton with the sturmey hub. Defintely more cost effective to go 6 speed at the back if so

5 speed is dog shit, let’s fit an alfine 8 / 11 and never look back!
-
• #13407
112mm stock! Tiny right?!
-
• #13408
That small!!! Knew it was odd, but that’s odd 😂
-
• #13409
What aftermarket triangle would you use to convert to alfine?
-
• #13410
Kinetics.

Regarding the 4 to 5 speed conversion that was talked of fairly recently - you can also take the opportunity to remove a cable from your bike:

Has been explored before or just a wish list?

Is that a custom cable puller box thing? Got a link?
-
• #13416
For you, yes.

As usual, you’re too kind.

@furious_tiles
Will provide an update to you directly, if and when my smart casual (there is no such thing by the way) passes the standard of the bouncer of said institution. Of course, with folding bike. -

I can’t imagine you being anything but smart

Someone please help me sell this. Sick of eBay time wasters. After around £700 but open to offers.

Bristol, but I can ship. Will be shipped in a Brompton box.

• #13424
probably worth including a photo of the really rusty rear triangle no?
-
• #13425
I’m not trying to hide anything, that is just a photo of the whole bike. The rear triangle does have some corrosion but it’s not too bad and I have a photo of it.
If anyone is interested I have a load of photos including some of the uglier bits, but mechanically the bike is perfect.
It has brand new tyres, brake pads, chain and cogs.
