• To clarify it is illegal to remove the EGR valve itself, not the build up inside it. Removal or tampering with any part of the engine which relates to emissions is illegal eg DPF, EGR or Cat delete. It is very common though. And realistically removing the EGR is likely to extend the life of the engine as recirculating exhaust gasses back through the engine degrades the oil quicker and increases wear (but reduces emissions). Removing the valve and cleaning it is seen to be the economical repair.
The buildup is usually the result of too many short journeys in a diesel engined vehicle, where the engine isn’t getting to temperature and producing more crap in the exhaust gasses, which then get stuck in the valve rather than being burned off by hotter exhaust gasses.

  • Interesting. This car generally gets short trips to the allotment, or 60-100mile round trips for things the train/bike is less suited for. Petrol not diesel though.

And i have definitely never removed egr, cat, or anything else from my motorbike or anything…

  • Tbh I’m only really familiar with diesel EGR problems - I’m already out of my depth if yours is a petrol!

  • Highly tuned (and standard) 2 strokes pass the ulez.

Sounds odd but what car is it? Maybe a specific forum could help with ways to induce a egr regen. Maybe someone nearby has a copy of the manufacturers software to get a better idea of the issue. These are just generic ish answers that I have used to get help in the past.
