• To clarify it is illegal to remove the EGR valve itself, not the build up inside it. Removal or tampering with any part of the engine which relates to emissions is illegal eg DPF, EGR or Cat delete. It is very common though. And realistically removing the EGR is likely to extend the life of the engine as recirculating exhaust gasses back through the engine degrades the oil quicker and increases wear (but reduces emissions). Removing the valve and cleaning it is seen to be the economical repair.
    The buildup is usually the result of too many short journeys in a diesel engined vehicle, where the engine isn’t getting to temperature and producing more crap in the exhaust gasses, which then get stuck in the valve rather than being burned off by hotter exhaust gasses.
