thanks, yes it looks a bit fatter but at least it is relatively generic if it is the same basic stuff in another dia. Interesting about squealing being related to belt and that having a relation to fluid: is that because fluid also lubes wheel of steering pump? not sure if i can imagine from desk

did you see the mazda on singletrackworld? £800 and looked decent

Fair!
Helps my case that a bigger /taller vehicle doesn't protect against this.Super clean glass inside and out, rear screen mesh and some clear anti glare glasses and you've got the best chance of driving at night without issue.

Nah, the £400 donor car is a D5. Not bothered about the coolant loss, as it’ll be undriveable by the time I’ve pulled all the parts I need, then getting scrapped.
My actual car’s got the 210bhp 2.5T petrol lump; pushing 150K miles & still sweet. Should really do the cambelt again…

my engine light issue mentioned a few days back is the EGR valve - garage advice is "it won't break down unless it gets really bad, just see how it goes". £200 odd for the part, looks accessible enough to replace myself, I have the Haynes manual.
Is this actually something no amateur should fuck with? Is the error actually something that could be solved by pulling the unit off, filling it with carb cleaner, and sticking it back on with some liquid gasket?

Google image says YT is full of videos of people fixing/cleaning without removing. Haven't watched any but from the images it looks like spraying carb cleaner.
Maybe check those out first.
The risk you often have with this stuff is it being held on by certain clips that then break because your not practiced in removing whatever part it is.
I'd check out the non removal options first to see if they fix it.

Use of one of those pour in the tank make the egr cleaner and follow the instructions.
Worked on a few friends cars that the egr was a bugger to get to, (vw Passat diesel)

A cute Vauxhall, said nobody ever, probably. I think this 1956 Velox is, and is clearly loved. If Noddy and Big Ears are still driving I could imagine them in this.
And the wheels look shit on this, but otherwise a very cool looking land yacht, and I'm a total sucker for bulbous weirdly shaped fastback type rear windows. Nice little west London runabout, a 1971 3rd Generation 7.5 litre Buick Riviera. I'm imagining a debt collector drives this and the trunk is full of severed fingers.

Holy shit. That Buick.

We had a black Vauxhall Velux when I was a kid. My job to clean the chrome :)

Not a fan of the US TV show due south ;)
(Once again what the fuck do I know, Canadian TV show. But remember the importance of not using cars cigarette lighter. )

Had same prob with my antique Audi. Tried the additives - no luck. Replacement part was very expensive. Had it removed - eBay blanking plate fitted and ecu altered so the car works without it. In my car it had a huge affect when driving maybe you will be lucky. My research revealed any diy cleaning when the part is in situ comes with risks.

That’s the EGR off my e46 320d. Worth noting that it is technically illegal to remove it.

Grim. What does a responsible person do with the contents of that?

To clarify it is illegal to remove the EGR valve itself, not the build up inside it. Removal or tampering with any part of the engine which relates to emissions is illegal eg DPF, EGR or Cat delete. It is very common though. And realistically removing the EGR is likely to extend the life of the engine as recirculating exhaust gasses back through the engine degrades the oil quicker and increases wear (but reduces emissions). Removing the valve and cleaning it is seen to be the economical repair.
The buildup is usually the result of too many short journeys in a diesel engined vehicle, where the engine isn’t getting to temperature and producing more crap in the exhaust gasses, which then get stuck in the valve rather than being burned off by hotter exhaust gasses. -

Interesting. This car generally gets short trips to the allotment, or 60-100mile round trips for things the train/bike is less suited for. Petrol not diesel though.
And i have definitely never removed egr, cat, or anything else from my motorbike or anything…

Can fail an MOT if the egr is not there, not sure how illegal software egr deletes are.
-
• #74546
Tbh I’m only really familiar with diesel EGR problems - I’m already out of my depth if yours is a petrol!
-
• #74547
Are you related to my mechanic? He’s not an EGR fan either for all the reasons you have mentioned. I haven’t done an MOT yet so it will be interesting to see if I have problems with the lack of it. If it fails, I will have an annoying quandary - a new EGR costs more than the value of the car, that will have me thinking.

I had egr woes on my BMW. Glad to have a petrol now.

Has anyone on here got a R129 SL? I have become slightly obsessed with them this year.

You'll want to listen to the February 11 episode of the carmudgeon show then
Getting bored looking at cars that the pictures were taken a long time ago and that look worn but people want serious cash
