I've just been made aware of cycle.travel and it is very, very good. The segmentation in to route type (busy road, quiet road, gravel, etc.) Is very useful and the 3D elevation profile is ridiculously cool.

Anyone with Komoot able to export a GPS file for me? It won't let me do it without buying the region/world pack.

Apologies if this is best asked elsewhere, but what are the current best, free apps (for Android in my case) for following gps routes? For me, best would mean: clear and easily deciphered maps, easy to use interface, and an efficient app, and by free I mean I don't have to pay to access basic functionality. Any advice?

Osmand? I wouldn't say it's clear and easy but it is free. If you want clear and easy you'll have to pay I reckon.

OsmAnd is good enough for free, but intuitive it is not. I'm sticking with it for the time being, but considering paying a fiver for BikeComputer as that's had some good reviews.
Speaking of OsmAnd (and other such apps), does anyone know how to join a route that someone else has generated without having to go to their starting point? I've a route that starts fairly close to my place that I want to hook into around a mile or so in but I'm worried it'll try and direct me to the start instead of allowing me to continue with it. What's the best way around this?

Sorry, dunno but RWGPS allows you to move the start point of a route.
-
• #161
Rwgps premium is 79usd per annum and for sure good on phone, if you're considering 5 quid for an app.
-
• #162
I think I only pay £40 for it. Is that because I'm grandfathered in to one of their old plans?
-
• #163
I think I'd rather pay a fiver one-off than $79 a year, but YMMV.
-
• #164
You subscribed when $79 = £40?
-
• #165
Sorry I miss read, I thought you meant it was a 5er a month. My bad.
-
• #166
I didn't make it clear it was a one-off charge, so that's fair enough.
-

"On May 24, 2023, we will bill your credit card on file to renew your Basic membership in the amount of $40.00."
Looks like I meant 40USD.

So, it looks like I have a legacy price.
But still, the Basic is 20 bucks cheaper than Premium
-

Do it do navigating. I should look and know really.
Ah yeah premium is for advanced tools on computer. -
• #171
Looking at the feature list, it appears I have Premium but I'm paying an old price for it. I'm confused. I've been a subscriber since 2015 or 2016 though so that's probably why.

Thanks Skinny and Ketsbaia - I think I used Osmand before and found it fine. I suppose that's a lot to ask for a free app, it's annoying so many things are subscription based now...

I tend to plan with google maps, use the streetview overlay to make sure they've had a car down the route as they're sometimes not suitable for a roadbike.
Then use MapsToGPX website to convert and BikeGPX on an old android to actually ride.
The GPX file will give you a better ascent estimate as google maps always underestimates.
It's all free and not too much of a faff
-
• #174
Well, I spent £4.29 on BikeComputer Pro and it doesn't let me import GPX files, so that's a refund requested immediately. What a pile of shit.
-
• #175
Haha
You sure?
"You can load turn-by-turn instructions also for imported GPX
✓ Rotating map : the map follows your direction to have the upcoming area always on top
✓ Import GPX tracks or POIs and follow the track of a friend on the map"
https://www.androidwearcenter.com/androidwear/app/BikeComputer+Pro/2747?lang=en
cycle.travel gives you quiet route mapping using OSM cycle overlay and includes all marked cycle tracks and routes,
You can also click to see either streetview or local area images (geotagged images) for areas on the route.
It's not perfect, but it is really good.
