  • What's the view here on mirrorless vs DSLR in the current state of things?

If one was looking for a full frame camera for non professional use...

  • You’ll probably get mixed answers but camera manufacturers have been putting all their efforts into mirrorless systems.

Canon and Nikon now have whole lens lineups for the R & Z systems so their SLR lenses are probably not going to receive much attention from now.

Mirrorless tends to have loads of bells and whistles and are usually equally happy shooting video but you can get a full frame dslr now for relative bargains, because no-ones investing in those systems.

  • Thanks.

I've now read around the subject a bit and as you say, DSLRs are essentially being retired from product line ups so that does shape the question somewhat.

  • I also wouldn’t give much credence to claims that mirrorless is more rugged. Flappy mirrors have been going to war zones for decades.

  • Yes, mechanical SLRs seem to last more or less indefinitely.

I doubt that many current cameras, SLR or otherwise, with touch screens etc will still work flawlessly in 40 or 50 years time.

  • These blobs are not on the lens
Are these possibly on the sensor?
What do I do to fix? Fuji x100t

  • Might have to send to Fuji. Their repairs are great though.

I’d pop into their convent garden shop, they are super helpful in there.

  • edit-being clueless

  • It’s a fixed lens camera so will have to go to Fuji for that

  • Lol, OK, ignore me

  • Anyone got experience of the Canon EOS R? Tempted to get one and an adapter and stock up on old EF L lenses. Seems like a lot of camera for the money + a touch smaller than a 5D. Would mean selling my X-pro3 though...

Saw a Canon 5D mkII for £300 in good condition the other day. That's a lot of camera for the money

  • Depends a bit on how much you care about size/weight/buttons and of course budget. You can get some good deals on dslr's like the Canon 5d mk3 which will get you full frame for cheaper than mirrorless and are still banging cameras, but aren't exactly pocketable. Mirrorless cropped sensor cameras like the Sony 6x series are at a size no DSLR can match but at the trade of buttons/grip size. There's current mirrorless full frame which are very good but far from a bargain. If money was no object I'd own a Nikon Z6ii. Then of course there's the cross over cameras like the Fuji XT series which are mirrorless cropped sensor but in a more handling friendly body than the Sony 6x. They'll all take great pictures these days. It's also worth considering any lenses you already own or prices of second hand ones for the body you like. Personally I went for a second hand Sony A7ii as an attempt to get the best features for the money but Sony lenses keep their value second hand a bit more than brands like Canon. I'm sure a lot of people will argue to get the minimum requirement body then spend all that you can on the best lenses.

  • ^ very valid points!

Just had a look at what I'd get for my fuji kit and prices have collapsed it feels. If you're looking for something smaller than a DSLR you'll get some seriously good kit for not much money there

  • Things have moved on a lot since I had sold my XPro2 way back when. Looking to get back into with something small and reasonably affordable with the occasional dabbling in video. Would the XT4 be the best avenue to return, or something else to consider that might be cheaper but with all the same functionality that I can then invest the savings into lens. And what's a good lens to go for to cover photography/video? I'm planning to get the 23mm because that was my favourite photography lens on the XPro2.

  • Updated my Fuji to do some video work about a year or so ago and ended up going for the X-T3 - offers all of the video features I wanted (aside from IBIS, which I wasn't too sure I'd need, though admittedly I've been using it a bunch on my work FX3!) and was significantly cheaper than an X-T4, though prices might have changed since the 5.

I've been VERY impressed with the video capabilities. Even more though, despite a lot of people saying how Fuji colour is very consistent through all models and all the hype about the earlier gen cameras (which is what I had prior to the XT3), I found the picture quality to be so much better - lots more dynamic range and even better colour. Haven't looked back and would recommend.

I remember from my research back then that the X-T30 offered a lot of similar features but was lighter on video features, mostly the lack on in camera 10bit which was a deal breaker for me but might not be for you; many people bang on about how necessary it is, I still think for many people in-camera colour is probably the way to go and definitely simplifies things.

  • Also a big fan of the X-T series. I use an X-T2 with a couple of nice primes for most things. For video a zoom might be better?

  • Thanks.

I don't own any lenses at present other than the 27mm pancake which came on the Fuji X-E3.

As fixing the roof on our hose is currently consuming all available funds, it's probably become a fairly academic question for now. But I'll keep an eye on second hand market and see if anything particular jumps out.

I'd keep the Fuji anyway if I bought another camera so I'd have a pocketable and then a less pocketable option.

  • Talk to me about digital cameras for a pre/teenager who wants to experiment and take weird photos and manipulate them on their iPad.
    Second hand obvs.

  • What's your budget do you want a DSLR or P&S

  • Budget : chips/pennies

I mean a DSLR would be nice, but given things get picked up and put down again and never used....

  • Lens choice is crippling if you’re getting into photography. Better to get a fixed P&S or something with quite a small range IMHO - those old Lumix LX-3 P&S spring to mind and they can be had for cheap second-hand.

  • Canon 350D with
    https://www.wexphotovideo.com/canon-eos-350d-body-only-used-3097870/
    Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
    https://www.mpb.com/en-uk/product/canon-ef-s-18-55mm-f-3-5-5-6-is
Or get the older, non IS lens for less.

Or if they want to get real creative, for some extra ££
    Canon EOS 5D with 50mm f/1.8

Can trade it all back when it starts to gather dust.

  • Woah, that’s cheaper than I was expecting. Some flash cards and off we go right?
