  • Actually that's a bit of a mad reach to the levers given the angle of the drop

  • I can just get to them from the 'hoods' position but the bars are really shallow so I can spend more time in the drops than I would on a normal drop bar. I may experiment with moving the levers up to the top nubbin bit, not sure if the clamp will be uncomfortable when riding in the 'hoods' position then. Maybe a non hinged lever on the top part would work.

My thinking with these hinged levers was that it'd make swapping the drop bar out for a flat/riser nice and easy.

  • Another super cool bike. Weird bars but very cool. Is it actually a new bike or did you just mod/repaint another one?

  • Thanks. It’s the third frame I built in 2018 or so, given a new rear triangle. It was originally built for 25/28mm tyres, I’d given it new seatstays a couple years ago in order to be able run 32s with guards but the chainstays were just a bit short for these 40mm tyres.

  • Levers above the join with the reach adjusters screwed in a bit actually seems like it might be the way to go.

  • I've got the same frameset and have been considering doing the same, is it just a case of using one of the little conversion kits that thread onto the freehub?

  • I used a Surly cassette cog which has a wider base than a cog in a cassette to reduce gouging of the freehub. Gusset do one too.
You can then use a conversion kit which comes with spacers and a lockring; the kits with some thin spacers being the best as you can get the chainline right. If you have old cassettes you can rip them apart to get spacers and use a lockring from a cassette instead of buying a kit. I think you're best with a lockring from a cassette with a 12T smallest sprocket as it is larger.

  • Can you explain those bars? Did you make them, what’s the thought process, is there a thread?

  • Ta, at some point I'll give it a bash.

  • Yeah I made them. I wanted to make a drop bar but my bender can’t do bends close enough together to do them in one piece so I came up with this design.

I started with some narrower, deeper ones for my track bike and then I got to thinking how a brake lever could sit on them so built this set.

I’ve done a bit of riding on these ones with a single front v brake lever mounted under the joint, I was using a coaster brake at that point.

  • If the last handlebar set up offended you, look away now. #redshiftonabudget

  • I have some TRP Euro X Canti brakes in pretty good condition for sale for £30 and was wondering if there was any interest here before I make a proper sales thread? Pick up / meet up London, cash only. Live south east. Work Bermondsey. Full transparency they won't come with the mounting bolts. Hope everyones had a good weekend.

  • Sold a frame Wednesday, bought this Thursday. The circle of life. Surprised you don’t see more Genesis day one tracklocross builds - loads of tyre clearance and generally quite cheap… also if anyone wants to sell me some trp cx9s and s500 brake levers that would be great, these tektro mini vs are shite

  • Love my orange day one, and have never got on with mini VS. I'm using shimano cantis with BBB multi compound pads and they work great. I sold my original frame and bought a Langster- terrible move as i hated the ride. 10yrs later found a 60cm on gumtree and all is good again.

  • A nice set of cantis was also on my radar - how did you go about mounting the hanger for the rear brake?

  • 38 and then 17:19 I think

  • I rode 42/19 yesterday and I think that's a little steep...I'm thinking 40/19? As I have a nice Easton crank etc

Would you say having better low end is best? It seems logical for acceleration out of corners and for the climbs?

  • From my experience of being an old duffer at the middle/bottom end of the races and when I've raced, lolz, I think I used a 38 whether I was single or 1 x 10/11.

Flat dry courses, yeah go for it on the bigger rings. Once the mud comes you're going to be grinding it out or running anyway.

  • There are others on here with better credentials for SSCX. I only did a couple of races a few years ago.

  • I will literally be doing one race...this is just for pure LOL'z and I have promised my mate for the last 5 years I will do a race with him.

  • What crank bcd / holes etc do you have?
I might have a 38 in the shed.

  • I run 42 - 18/20/22. I'd be going for 22 at HH. Barely use the 18 even though it's my best freewheel. Will probably drop the front to 40t and see if I can get more use out of it.
