  • 1 or 2 pence pieces are all you need between spike and floor, if you feel like spending big the a half sovereign or perhaps even a full sovereign.

Gold has better mids and more defined transient bass attack.

  • Gold has better mids

Maybe true, but BTC is more transparent.

  • sensible chuckle

  • Tannoy HPD 315 from a set of cheviots

  • Ha, good point - will 2 pence pieces definitely give a playfully insouciant but subtle and nuanced separation of the production on all musical styles? Because that's quite key in what I'm looking for.

  • Cheers, good point - quite like the idea of something being permanently attached to avoid mishaps, but I see what you mean about the price difference, might be the better option for now at least.

  • There's some spikes that have an integrated cup for hard surfaces, pretty sure I saw some on AliExpress.

  • Interesting, how different is the new cabinet size? Also how did you work out the cabinet size? Presumably there's a better bass response now?

  • Thanks, will investigate further

  • I think the standard cheviots are around 60L. 120L is understood to be the ideal volume for the 12" HPDs.

I didn't design or build them, I bought them off the who did, after talking to a couple of the experts on Tannoys. I've got the drawings and an immaculate set of OG cabs/crossovers/etc, so I can revert back.

It is more of a play really. I'm happy with the rest of the set up, so i want to see if i can improve them.

so far, so good. the bass response is tighter/deeper, but the biggest improvement (so far) is the ability for the speakers to hold it together at higher volumes. i'm still playing with the set up (i have plinths/townshend platforms and stuff to have a go with, but they are big and heavy fuckers)

  • What a fantastic view

  • This was the quickest option as I'm WFH and couldn't resist getting stuck in, however, I've set myself up for muddied mids and perilously wayward treble, as the change compartment in the kitchen drawer only offered up 3 x 1ps, and 1 x 2p...!

Don't forget the pre-1992 coins have better damping at the top end, at the expense of slightly worse phase coherence in the bass. It's worth experimenting with placement of different mixes, e.g. pre-92 front and post-92 rear or vice versa to optimise the sound for your musical preferences. I've even heard of some mad free-jazz fans using diagonal placements, pre-92 inside front and outside rear and post-92 on the other corners‽

  • I use 1987 Maundy money, 3p at the back and 4p at the rear. I find silver gives a dynamic presence if slightly less imaging height/depth than small denomination coins froma decimalisation commemorative set

Not sure if just £820 a set is expensive enough to persuade audiophiles of the benefits 😀

  • .

  • Not audiophile but perhaps useful nonetheless - I just bought a pair of these JBL wifi speakers for the kitchen and for 57 pounds quid a pair they're excellent value. Might go in for more

  • Can one link more than 2?

  • Is this basically a Google home with a better speaker?

  • I've got two linked as a stereo pair, then grouped with the WiiM in the living room as a wider multiroom group. So yes, I think!

  • Cheap(er) way in to LS3/5a ownership or expensive way to test the theory of interchangeability between models?

  • There's no way that's not going to always raise a question in your mind about the stereo image is there? They won't be easy to move on if or when the time comes either.

I'd try to find the extra £276 or less to get this Spendor pair

  • Yeah, no I’m not for a moment thinking of buying them it’s just funny how one of the purposes of the strict specifications and licensing was that you could damage one speaker and swap it out for any other in a broadcast setting but in the private market most people would run a mile. Beyond that you now get people discussing the merits of one unicorn version over another when the whole purpose of the design was for them all to sound the same.

I’ve got some knock-offs and they sound amazing, I’ll stop at that.

  • I don't think I posted about the RME AD/DA convertor. It is excellent.

It clearly shows the locked 44Khz Toslink, but I can connect up a laptop directly and using a sample 32bit FLAC file (FLAC only got this support last year, not much music available using it, very few sources are going to produce this) I can get the RME up to 32bit / 192Khz.

That's really all I wanted to know, if I used the USB connection would I be able to achieve the highest quality possible and have the DAC avoid up/down sampling and just convert whatever it was given. The answer is yes.

Still got to fall back on the Chromecast Audio for a while as I've not yet acquired a small PC to use as the headless Plexamp receiver — at least all the rest is in place and ready for it.

One thing though, it gets pretty warm. I was surprised how warm it gets. Radiates a nice warmth on a cold day so I am glad to have put it in a place where there's decent air around it.
