I would not rule out the 3.0 or 3.2 flat 6. Lovely engines and more bomb proof than the 2.5.
Yes they are heavy on fuel but how much that matters will depend on whether you need to drive a lot of miles or not. The 2.5 isn't exactly frugal either.
Edit: 3.6 is really nice but quite rare. There's a Subaru nerds discussion on the topic here:

cant remember who it was, but someone mentioned 100k miles is when VAG cars start to become problematic. Our Mk5 golf, 108k, did the amber engine light when my OH was driving to work today. She span around and took it home, so its on the drive.
anything I can check without an obdII etc?

Bought my first ever car last week. 06 mini one, needed something cheap for a twice a month 90 mile round trip. Only time will tell.

Spotted a nice TR6 today.

Alright? My 130i is up for some big repairs - timing chain has started rattling and it needs a full new exhaust which is NLA so will be a fabrication job. I love this car dearly, it’s so much fun and so useable and the fact that it’s a bit tatty adds to the appeal tbh. With a few other bits the bill is going to be around £3k, the car is worth about £1500, I bought it for £4k 3 years ago and I’ve put about 40,000 miles on it.
I honestly can’t think of another car I would prefer, the only option I can see is another one the same, much nicer, same year but with only 56k on it. It’s £8k which is a lot but I could own it for 5 years before it gets to the mileage my current one had when I bought it.
Any suggestions for alternatives? The 130 has rear drive, it’s manual, it’s got 5 doors, a big boot, anonymous grown-up looks, it sounds tremendous and has a 265hp straight 6. Subaru Impreza is the only thing I can think of but the nasty interiors and boy racer image put me off.

130i is the modern incarnation of an Impreza, surely.

If you like bills why not go for an e9x 335i? Lots around that are suspiciously cheap, will no doubt provide both driving and financial excitement.

In my experience the bills come with the miles (I also run that low-miles e39 530i touring as a daily) and those turbocharged versions still hold good value for low mileage examples.

This is pretty cool, and has retro-fitted air-con, which would be handy (although I dread to think how much power it's taking):

Welcome back - you’ve been missed!

Can you fit a disassembled king size bed and two passengers in a mk1 Vauxhall Meriva? Asked no-one, ever.
Well, it turns out you can and there was room for a fair bit more. Sadly no pics.

I’ve ordered a polestar 2 for work. It’s a lease and everything is included tyres, services etc etc. but I’m starting to think it might not be the right car for me. So I’m tempted to cancel it.
I’ll need to travel for work, but I’ve been doing the job for 6 months and I’ve only had to travel twice. So maybe I could get a car that’s more suitable to my needs. In an ideal world id have a pick up truck for allotment duties and just life but m not sure how economical it would be if I did have to start doing more travel.
Any advice would be helpful, I’m really struggling to make a decision.
I can justify about £300-£350. My only issue is if something goes wrong it could be a costly repair.

Forget what the car is valued at, what's it worth to you? My personal view is that when I have a car I like for whatever reason I will happily pay to keep it running in top condition. £3 K doesn't sound like too much if you keep an otherwise good car going.
My particular kink is french hot hatches and I recently sold a really good one I loved. Bought a modern, safer 308 GTi 270 and it does absolutely nothing for me. Not a patch on the older 306.

I did consider getting rid of it more than once. I had a couple of issues with it that drove me towards throwing the towel in.
There was an oil leak at the front of the engine. I changed the crank seal and the timing cover seal (three times!!!) and couldn’t solve it. In the end I gave up and got some help.
It turns out it was the pulley itself. A brand new race part, from a reputable manufacturer was not machined concentric to the shaft, so it would spin ecliptically, causing the leak.
I have two kids and a busy job. It is fucking infuriating when you use a month of spare time trying to sort something like that, only for it to be the 350 quid bit you bought.
I also couldn’t get a solid brake pedal. I tried to be clever and use a dual circuit master cylinder from a really early American spec mgb. I tried to shorten the plunger thing and weld a nut on and spent hours bleeding it. I gave up and went beck to a single circuit in the end.
The windows were a fucking waste of time, too. They look racecar and save about 4g, but took ages to work out.
I’m happy as fuck with how it has turned out (so far!). I’m regretting using the povvo aluminium panels in the doors, as the rest looks great.
I need to redo the dash and a couple of other little jobs, too.

Sorry you got rid of the 306 that was great. Yeah that’s how I feel about it, but the option of changing it for a nicer version of the same car seems both sensible and desirable. 57k miles v 135k. Better the devil you know and all that but I do now have the experience to know what to look out for. I’m going to arrange to view it this weekend.

Selling my Beloved 1995 Mini Sidewalk at Mathewsons Classic Car Auction this weekend, ULEZ made it unsustainable to keep in London so hopefully it going to a nice new life in the country.
Being forced to get rid has means I have put no reserve on it, if anyone wants a bargain! Needs some work but the most fun I have had in a car!

It’s a bog standard 998 Mini Special (which is what they called the City in Europe) but it’s completely rust free, has been meticulously restored. The owner is a military man who has been fastidious with it and came armed with a folder full of history.
Thanks for the feedback. I think an outback is what we need!
