Well yes. And/or convert it to regular currency in a series of offshore accounts, not stored in a popcorn tin at the back of the airing cupboard

Her sister is my mate's neighbour - the runner's a GP who isn't bright enough to realise you don't jump in a car when you're wearing a tracking chip. Wouldn't want her diagnosing me if I had anything serious.
Also, having done a bit of ultrarunning and ultra-tri, it amazes me how ready people are to cheat - and risk their reputation in the sport and outside - when all that's on the line is a small trophy.

Tha article does explain that she quit the race and got in a car for 2.5 miles at which point marshall told her to finish anyway. But she shouldn't have accepted a prize or position at the end so still counts as cheating I guess

Ive enjoyed the Wrexham story as much as the next person, but £25m of tax money on a new stand feels a bit off...

I think money should be made available for football clubs from the public purse if they commit to certain requirements that retain them as a community asset. Things like ownership of ground & facilities, fan involvement etc.
Keeping clubs like this alive provide major lifelines for communities in terms of pure entertainment, employment, social initiatives such as wheelchair accessible sport etc.

Reckon £25m could do a lot for that too...
-
• #26934
Sure but it's often easier for local gov to invest in a private initiative rather than spool something up themselves and maintain it longterm (which would cost a lot more than £25m).
Let's say Wrexham can make it to the Championship and stay there, match day revenue for businesses in the area would be sustained over a long period of time that would far exceed this amount of money.
Obviously I'm in no way qualified to say whether or not there are better things going on in the same council district to invest that money in or even know if they already are investing the right amount in those but I am saying that outright derision of this because it's a football club or because of their ownership is short sighted.

With some of the shit that goes on, particularly with the big clubs in the Premier league, it's easy to underestimate how intrinsic a football club is to the local community, particularly in the smaller towns.
-
• #26936
I get what your saying, but it is a privately owned club, by people who have a lot of money, and will reap the financial benefits.
Not sure exactly what the tax payers who live in, say, Cardigan are supposed to get from this?
-
• #26937
When you say financial benefits, at this level, wrexham is a loss making club. To the tune of £3m last year I believe.
-
• #26938
A loss of £3 million due to the salaries, expenditures (transfers etc) of a couple of multi millionaires to boost the profile of the club no?
Edit, not against clubs and communitys etc, just think 25m could be better spent than a new stand at a football ground
Also edit, it's worry pointing out that the request was denied before the media circus started.
If that £25m also includes lots of community spaces for education, healthcare etc that I've missed, and genuinely will benefit the area then happy to be wrong.

It's not super clearly worded in that article, but could it be investment from the council? As in they're expecting a return on it?
-
• #26940
3M extra on football apparently. So more money spent on players, coaching etc despite 400% increase in revenue. The 3.3M quid lost was put into the club by the couple of multi millionaires rather than it paying them.

Interesting article on The Athletic on the proposal today.
Couple of key points for me:
- This scheme was devised in 2019 by the Welsh government before the club was taken over
- Council report shows 732 jobs created and a 'a gross value-added impact of £54.1m' which is £3 for ever £1 invested. Suggesting they're not paying for the whole £25m
- Train station portion of the investment (£8m) will bring an additional 60k people & £3m annually from completion
- Part of goal is to bring international football (mens & women's) back to the ground
It's almost like sporting endeavours can be good investments / community assets of value if run responsibly.

The 'media circus' can only have helped convince the decision makers that this is a worthy investment.
More power to them.

“As a Sukhoi Su-34 air force plane was flying over the city of Belgorod there was an accidental discharge of aviation ammunition,” the defence ministry said, according to Tass.
