• There's a BBQ place near me in Edinburgh, the smoker was about 2x that size and I'm pretty sure the owner only ran the restaurant so he had an excuse to buy one

  • Have spatchcocked and rubbed a couple of v large chickens to bbq this weekend. Internet is telling me l need indirect heat, but they are going to take up most of the grill real estate. What's my best method of heating / coal layout? Won't need to be too long a cook but I don't want to burn the underside.

Actually looks like I can smush them together a bit and keep the coals to one side OK. Yum. Can't wait.

  • rubbed a couple of v large chickens

    Filth

  • Costco are doing the Kamado Joe Classic II for £1,150.

That's £300 cheaper that the next seller (ignoring the schonky af looking sellers, that it).

Is it worth it at that price?

  • I have the louisiana grills one from Costco which is half the price of the kamado Joe, the details on the vents and little extras aren't as nice as the Joe but it's 24 inch rather than 18 and definitely not worth paying over 600 quid more for a Joe.

Imo you'd be better off buying a 600-700 quid kamado (there's loads out there now) and spending another couple of hundred on a thermometer/fan control like the thermoworks signals. When the only options were the big green egg and the Joe I think they were worth the money but I think now there's more options I don't think they're worth it.

  • Dunno but I’m very tempted by this.

  • Yes please. Bit of apple wood on the coals to add flavour. Took 30mins longer than planned but well worth it.

  • With the weather improving I thought it was time to clean up and sort out my Weber Go Anywhere which accidentally spent all winter in the garden.

A food bag of briquettes and some firelighters fit in the chimney for a pretty portable package. Lid goes on fine.

  • That's a little ripper, I've been looking at basic fire pit type options to take car camping but I reckon that could function as a dual purpose, especially as it has a lid to keep the filth in.

  • Ffs, now I have to buy one of them for camping etc.

  • The lid is pretty good. The legs fold round to secure it and you can carry it by the handle.

  • Just picked this thing up for £20. Banged up and dutty (see missing ash catcher, it's bent like a banana) like all cheap second hand grills should be.

Plan is clean it up tonight, fix it up and then clean again tomorrow, smoke a brisket all day Friday. Wish me luck.

Edit: forgot to add, inspo from this thread has been insane. So excited to get going!

  • It's got the good grate though with the lift up flaps for putting more charcoal in, bargain

  • What's the lightest, (but also nicest) portable grill for seafood and veg?

At the moment am thinking something foldable like a ProQ Flatdog Foldable & Portable BBQ rather than a bozy shape like a Lotus.

There's a beach we discovered last autumn that requires a bit of light abseiling to reach the bottom of. I want to plan in meals now because I'm thinking it'll be our home from about May onwards.

  • Lightest is surely just a bare grill grate with fold-out feet? Or even without + prop up the grill with stones from the beach/dig a pit for the coals?

  • Weber kinda clean.
    Brisket kinda trimmed.
    6am alarm, let's go!

  • So the rain is your fault? I see.

  • Sorry bud, not me. BBQ season here.

  • Snow Peak Takibi

  • ^nice but pricey

  • ^ Not very light either. V.well made tho. Ours still looks new(ish)

  • The little cast iron pan is a great idea, I have one of these too. Everyone that has experienced it always ends up buying one.

  • What kind of things do you do in it?

  • Last time round I just did some padron peppers, nice quick snack whilst you're cooking other stuff. Also stuff like smashed burgers and sauteed mushrooms.

  • Ended with a 11h 45m cook. Heat got a little low towards the end and I over-corrected but still real tasty. Gonna wrap instead of boat next time too. Fully looking forward to next weekend.
