• Yeah i remember them the gloss black or carbon weave one could work. I'm currently looking at many stems. One of these but with the face plate the right way up?

  • This is the look i was hoping I'd end up with but It hasn't really worked. At least I've got the same seatpost coming. I'll see if i can lose a cm from the headset and how much that improves things before i hastily list the stem.

  • That is a brilliant frameset - this is going to be an excellent build. You've probably already forgotten about the waiting time by now.

About the stem: just my humble opinion, but normal ahead stems can look good on a vintage/retro frame. It looks great when the angle of the stem puts its parallel with the toptube. For a horizontal top tube, you'll need a -17 (more or less) stem for this. Also, a minium of spacers helps. The negative part: this puts you in a quite aggressive position. And if a bike doesn't fit, you're never gonna love it.

You should also not underestimate the impact that bars / position of shifters on bars have on the relative height / position of your shifters (where your hands will be most). From experience, switching bars can easily affect the height with a coupe of cm. Check BDHU topic ;)

But whatever you decide, it's your bike. And its going to be a beauty!

  • I’ll be putting Velo orange tall stack stem on mine when it’s delivered. Matching silver seatpost too.
Available in black also. Stem not expensive either, and means can use 31.8 bars that I already had.

  • Yep that’s the one

  • Could work and this could look nice but if i can get the headset stack down i might be ok? It also puts the bar height right where i want it.

  • Frame is class. S-works sl stem is nice, hard to find -17 though.

  • Aah - 12 mostly it seems

  • 17 stems look worse than angled ones with a flat top tube unless there are zero spacers

  • Or perhaps try a conical headset spacer to hopefully give a smooth aesthetic/transition.
Been trying to convince my mate to slam the stem on his colnago (he’s got an interesting conical top part of the headset branded colnago) but when your over 50 leaning over gets a tad harder.

  • There's a conical one on it so i may grab a cheap kalloy just to see how it looks and check the height

  • (Cheap kalloy + Nail Polish) x 2 colnago stickers = profit

  • Is it a 1 or a 1 1/8 steerer?

  • 1 inch using a 1 1/8 shim

  • i feel like colnalgo should make a range of 1” steerer stems if they are speccing these frames like this. plus would be nice to match with post

  • I used a Kelly 1" ahead stem when they were still available on my Masters - sold them off though ..

Maybe you could commission @PhilDAS to make you a lovely fillet brazed / painted black stem then it would keep everyone happy. (maybe)

  • Lol it's possible

  • I just re-read the thread, Nik you gotta make it perfect for you lad!! If you need anything sent over from Germany drop me a message. Gonna be a beautiful bike

  • They definitely should even on the Colnago website they're pictured with lower end of range Dedas

  • This bike is so stunning, you have waited so long, I feel like you have to go custom, or maybe Sim works tomboy if you can find one in your length somewhere but even then you’ll want the wrap over single bolt bar attachment.

  • Cheers i think I'm going to have to go custom or possibly something like a Deda Superleggero and get it sprayed plain gloss black. The Sim Works Anna Lee is coming off this week.

  • Do you know what the tyre clearance is like? I’ve also been toying with the idea of getting one too, probably in Saronni red.

  • Decent room for 28's possibly 30?
    I've got a 25 on the rear and a 24 up front.

  • nice! i think a suitably svelte stem repainted black could work, the old dedas are skinny. weirdly the below could be made to aesthetically fit the bill, single bolt, low stack, thin-ish. It is massively over built so could be smoothed a bit? New face plate, bolts and paint? I do realise its heavy and basic currently.

edit 5 degree so will be pointing up, oh well

  • Can anyone ID this stem from a low res image?
