Which Tyres?

  • Oh, I haven't ordered anything yet but leaning towards a Mezcal/Barzo combo. Let me know what you have though

  • I have that exact combo, unfortunately 29x2.6 but I deffo have some other bits in 27.5 that will only fit the Tripster on the back so not so useful to me now I have a 29er.

  • Had the tub version and they were fairly susceptible to punctures. Time/technology may have moved on though.

  • I've had both the old open tubular clinchers and newer tubeless versions. Both ride real nice but are pretty fragile

  • Pretty sure there's some Vittoria in the collection.

You bought some Saguaros off me I think, 27.5×2

  • Best to go with Corsas again then I guess... thanks lads

  • Maybe give this new-ish Pirelli a try?

    https://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/road-bike-reviews/pirelli-p-zero-race-tlr-28

Got very good results in the test lab, slightly better than the Corsa Controls and Strada Pro HTLRs in terms of rolling resistance and puncture protection. How/if that transfers to the real world I don't know....

  • Cheers dude, I’ll have a look

  • Anyone ridden Trevail Ramparts in 42, are they true to size?

  • I was about to mention that the 38s I have come up more like a 35, then I remembered that you sold me them.

  • haha, yeah. I keep wanting go back to them, but just in a bigger size, but I don't really want to faff with mudguard adjustment If they come up like a 38.

  • Had an absolute battle with some Specialized Roubaix Pro 2Bliss 32. Could not get them to mount properly on some basic clincher rims and didn't know what was going on. Seems you need to treat them as if tubeless and really force them on by pumping over pressure even on these rims then letting them down. Really happy with them having used the 25s many times before.

  • My 700c variants measured 40mm wide when new, but the front is now 41mm (rear is still 40mm, weirdly).

    On 19mm internal / 23mm external rims

  • Yep, they're still untouched. Although I'm only seeing one of them - maybe the other is in my other trousers...

The other 650B/27.5 tyres are gravel (a new Rambler 47mm that I'd forgotten about, probably bought to match my current front) and MSO Exploro 50mm (pair, but can only see one) but the one I was thinking of is a...

    Mezcal 27.5 in 2.1" @JamesQGM

Not sure where the other Saguro 2" is but I can lay eyes on one.

  • Got some Teravail Ramparts 38 in black if anyone is interested ?

  • Thanks for checking. I think I'm going to go 2.35 Mezcal in the rear.

How do you find the 2.6 though? Thinking of going wider in the front

  • Honestly didn't ride them enough to know. I bought them during the bike build which then sat in storage for 6 months or more.

By the time I started riding again I was looking at doing SoG and AMR and I wanted to use tubeless inserts because of some fairly gnarly terrain + remote riding + fat fuck.

@skinny suggested CushCore and they go to 2.4" tyres so I swapped out the little-used 2.6" combo for a 2.35" Maxxis combo so I could run inserts.

I would think about the terrain you're using them on and how you ride. For me, I generally want bigger tyres because I'm heavy and shit. But then I have to hike a bike a lot, probably where other people ride, so maybe for me I'd be better with faster, slicker, lighter tyres and just walk more bits - that's what I had in mind for my Atlas repeat anyway. I wouldn't go bigger than 2.35 and I might choose a faster rear than Ardent Race.

  • Building up my Superstar i29s and wondering if anyone had any suggestions/recommendations for a 29x2.2/2.3 tyres for a good allrounder for multiday tours, KAW, Icknield, SDW etc.

  • Barzo. Or mezcal. I think the barzo rolls really well and has grip. The mezcal has less grip and I can't say I notice it rolls better, but does grip less. Thunder Burt could be another option but not used. Lots love the ikon.

Or a version of the g-one they're good tyres.

  • Thanks! Seen a lot of love for the Mezcal in this thread!

  • Got some 700c Nanos if anyone wants them... good condition with loads of life left in them... pm me for more info

  • Are there any options for not quite slicks other than SCHWALBE G-ONE SPEED in the 60-622 (29 x 2.35) size range? They are for shit roads with cattle grids, loose chippings and maybe a bit of sand (quite possibly a lot of sand) so they don’t need to be gravel/mtb in any way.
    Cheers ta.

  • Looking for options for a next build in 650x47B, and hesitating between three tyres:

    • panaracer gravelking sk in 650x48B
    • Wtb horizon road plus tcs in 650x47B
    • Wtb venture venture road plus in 650x47B

They would be used with tubes at the moment, and my riding is mainly road of various condition but still paved (probably 70% of my riding) and light gravel similar to us fire roads (probably 20-25% of my riding) but with occasional paths with bigger stones and debris or very easy singletrack (probably 5-10% of my riding).

I don’t want a tire that would feel to difficult to ride on pavement (say as a mtb tire), but I don’t want to be limited in the routes I am taking by my tires if they are only road-focused. Also, would appreciate if the tire is reasonably puncture resistant.
Today I think my need and my riding might point toward the horizon, but wondering how the venture is overall as it seems more grippy and more durable. Anyone tried one or the other?
Would like to try wtb as I already tried tires from panaracer (albeit another model), unless everyone say go for graveling sk.

    Cheers!

  • Horizons are super cheap on Ribble at the moment, so worth a try at £12 a tyre.
