• I’m looking for a solid lightweight wheelset for sub-£200 either preowned or new. I need a brake track. Other than Mavic Ellipses or Halo’s, what are my options?

  • I got a Planet X wheelset off eBay recently. Novatec hubs, 30 or so mm alloy rims with brake track. Probably not particularly lightweight but I’m are the Mavics or Halos either?

I find the Mavics pretty shit considering what they sell for new. The bearing system is terrible requiring proprietary tools to work on and the axles get damaged pretty easy.

Novatec hubs should be findable for sub £50, there’s plenty Rigidas, Mavic Open Elites or even DT Swiss r460 would be under £80 a pair, that’d leave £70 for spokes and build which should be possible. Probably be as light as the Halos and hand built instead of machine.

  • Great advice thanks. Would prefer to buy something built instead of faffing about though. But I guess I’d get something better (?).

I had the Mavic Ellipses a few years back. Loved them, but did have issues getting them off I.e. id loosen one side and the other would just spin (stuck on).
