  • First time post in this thread. I have a collection of rather more than 1000 LP records to sell, all my own and dating as far back as the late 1960s. Lots are from the 1970s when I was a rock music journo and got stacks of free records.

I was into 'hi-fi' early and was always careful to treat them well. Over the last 30 years such of them as I have listened to have been played on my Linn LP12. So a good number, all those that I got new, are in near-perfect condition.

My impression, trawling though this thread, is that much of my collection is not in the period or of a genre sought by today's vinyl collectors — but that may reflect the LFGSS demographic.

My question to you fellers that know this market is, is it worth my while to catalogue them and put them up for sale through Discogs? I am not looking for top $, rather just to reduce stuff in prep for moving home.

  • Definitely worth your time, but it will take quite a lot it. I found when looking for or adding anything like Led Zeppelin, Genesis or Pink Floyd there can be hundreds of different versions of the same release and it takes time to find exactly which one you want/have.

If you’re in no rush it will still be worth the time to catalogue them all and work out which ones you are going to keep and instantly list the ones you want to sell. I found it quite enjoyable and cathartic to catalogue my collection. You get into a bit of a rhythm with it and can obviously listen to stuff you haven’t heard in a while while you do it.

If there’s any that are not worth that much that aren’t worth the effort to sell and post out individually, you could always set those aside and sell as a job lot on here, eBay or take them to a shop.

As a journo you’ve probably got some rare or unusual promos that could be worth quite a bit I’d imagine. Did they come with press releases/promo sheets that you kept?

Got any post-Waters era Floyd (especially singles)?

  • I'll second that, it is well worth cataloguing. When I discovered discogs I did 10-20 each evening, I really enjoyed the process.

Don't suppose you have any reggae or hip hop do you? @HarmanMogul
