  • What is the latest on PayPal fees etiquette?

  • if buyer says they need £xx final price then add 4% on top and pay as G&S ?

  • Thanks @amey Makes sense, that was also my impression. In this case I was on the other side, as a seller. My prices were quite reasonable and already included postage (over a third of the item’s total value). Unfortunately I just had an ‘established forum user’ push his PayPal fees to my side. Didn’t even ask… it is not really about the money, just hate pushy people

  • You’re prices were very reasonable - seems a bit greedy to want you to front fees as well!

This is the fees calculator I always use. No idea why a cloth nappies site is one of the top PayPal fees hits

    https://www.clothnappytree.com/ppcalculator/

  • Chat about it before the deal is done? Never assume etc...

  • I thought the rules said a seller can’t force F&F, therefore it’s assumed to be part of the cost? I always factor it into the price and assume fees will hit me, therefore price accordingly unless meeting in person/able to physically see the goods before buying/selling.

“PayPal transactions must include buyer protection (sellers are not allowed to demand that money be sent as a "Gift" as this deprives the buyer of any form of protection on their payment).”

  • As has been said, for distance selling only PayPal goods and services is ‘allowed’ on the forum. Include it in your postage quote if you don’t want to front it, or if collection isn’t an option factor it in to the price. The buyer is just following the rules tbh

  • I should have mentioned it, to be fair 9/10 buyers either checked or covered the fees themselves. As a seller I would never ask anyone to choose F&F, it is their choice to make. As a buyer I would never pass on the G&S fees without a conversation. I always thought that was the etiquette.

Anyway one to remember for the future. Always clarify whether fees are included or not.

    Thanks @AlexD and @coventry_eagle

  • That happened to me too recently, on a new item I already listed for less than wholesale cost :/. Thanks for helping clarify the proper etiquette.

  • Just wasted a few minutes of my life trying to buy a frame from @colnago_costa
Agreed a deal over the weekend for the Merckx on classified at £350 , only to be told today ( as was hoping to pick up tonight ) no deal anymore as he has accepted the full asking from someone else . He seems fine with this , justification being I negotiated a discount and he has been messed about before on this forum . Hmm …
Anyhoo them the facts , and not going to say anymore ..

  • Bad trader @coventry_eagle

Puts item for sale but does not reply to private messages, also might try to ruin your day with some hurtful comments…

  • So having had a falling out you proceeded to try buy something off him.
    I’m sceptical…

  • Sorry, but this is really bad form.

From what I hear, you’d been hassling them in DMs and they’ve probably blocked you, hence no reply.

They didn’t like your bike - sometimes people don’t like peoples bikes and that’s ok.

  • Yeah leave it mate it's not worth it, it's not worth it
    Gotta love The Streets

  • I'm sad to have to be posting in here.

I recently bought a set of Corima wheels from @Stevethecoffee sold as in near new condition with not much use. They arrived and they are indeed in good condition but I found that the front wheel has some side to side play that seems to stem from a design flaw in the hub or a manufacturing tolerance.
A bit of googling shows someone on weight weenies had a similar problem on a brand new set of wheels, Corima apparently sent them a longer axle which apparently fixed the issue.

The wheels are now out of warranty and I don't have the receipt for them. It seems like the issue could be fixed but I when I bought the wheels I wasn't expecting any issues like this and really don't see why it should be me who now has to deal with it.
I contacted the seller saying I'd like to return the wheels since I'm not happy with them, I expected wheels with no issues.

This is the response I've been given:

I’m going to have to say no I’m afraid based on the fact that when I used the wheels I didn’t notice any issue with their performance which would lead me to investigate any mechanical problem, I’m sorry.
That and the carriage cost me £40 insured which I would likely have to swallow again if I resold them. It’s one of those things with buying sight unseen, you’ve discovered an issue that I didn’t know existed but you’ve got a top tier set of wheels for really cheap which can be sorted out, even if it’s a bit inconvenient.

I offered to pay the return cost and as a gesture half of the £40 paid for postage.

    This is the response

Yeah but what you’re calling an issue never was an issue when they were in my possession. I had them, I used them, they worked spot on, there was no issue. You’ve checked them more thoroughly than I ever did and in your opinion there’s something wrong. I would take them for a ride and see if there is an issue then. They’re out of my hands now, I’m not going to get into the admin of chasing something which wasn’t a problem when I was riding them.
I’m not going to take them back, I’m sorry.

I suggested that with that logic then anyone can sell something on the forum and then wash their hands of the sale when there is an issue just by saying "well they were fine when I had them"

    the response is:

I sold the frame which had some damage, I highlighted that. I sold the finishing kit but gave the bars away free because they had a score I didn’t like the look of and made sure the buyer was aware of that. If there’s issues with stuff I make sure people know and it gets reflected in the price. I haven’t tried to pull the wool over your eyes. In my experience there was no issue with the wheels, I sold them in good faith. I still believe that if you fit them to your bike you will have a great time on them without any remedial action being necessary.

It suggests that theres actually nothing wrong and I should just ride them!?

I'd dealt with Steve before, I bought an axs groupset from him with no issues, when I bought the wheels I sent the money via friends and family since I had no reason to believe that there would ever be any issue like this.
Of course if I'd used goods and services then an item not as described claim would have quickly settled this.

I'm just really disappointed that Steve has taken the line that he'd never noticed any issue before and so doesn't feel like it has anything to do with him now.
When the parcel arrived he messaged me checking that they hadn't been damaged and that I was happy with them. It surprising that a return is being point blank refused now that I've said I'm not actually happy with them.

I really don't think I'm being unreasonable in asking for a return? Even if it could be relatively easy fix, I shouldn't be stuck with wheels that have a problem just because the seller hadn't noticed it before?

A real shame that this is the stance thats been taken.

  • @TotalShanner Im with you, not unreasonable at all! When ive sold something in the past and the buyer wasn't happy, ive offered some kind of a resolution, either sending some money back, refund full amount inc postage etc

The seller should at least try to compromise and try to sort the issue out with you

Dont matter how much you paid for them

Think everything you said is reasonable...

  • Steve's been around for ever and is not known for ripping people off in any way, probably the last person I'd expect to crop up in this thread.

I guess there is a difference of opinion as to whether there is actually anything wrong with the wheels.

I hope both sides manage to achieve a satisfactory resolution.

  • Can't Corima provide you with said axle?
I sent my second hand Zipp 808 off Zipp to replace the recalled hub without any issues or request for sight of receipt, I can't see why you would have any issues here seeing as they admitted fault/design flaw.

Yep, I totally agree. It's why I'm quite surprised.

tbh I feel like a bit of a dick airing dirty laundry here but steves response suggests that its not going to be resolved and I'll just have to contact Corima and either be offered free axles to try https://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=164885 as that was what seemed to be what was offered to someone who had brand new wheels.
I'm not the original owner and they are past the 2 year warranty so worst case scenario I hope is that they will just ask for the 39 euros that the axle sleeves are listed for on the Corima site.
I'm already resolved to the fact that this is likely what I'll have to do. I'm just surprised by the response. Anything I've sold on the forum I would happily refund for any reason even "I just don't like it" would do.

But hey ho, lesson learned, use goods and services no matter what.

I've just emailed them through the contact page on the website. I'm not sure that they have admitted anything as such but going by that one post on weight weenies it seems like they would offer the axle sleeve mentioned.

  • Hate to post here but has anyone heard from @matteroftaste as of late? I had purchased something off of them a month ago but haven’t had word now for a good few weeks. They may have life going on so this isn’t to air them as a bad trader but just wondering if anyone has word? Cheers
