This. Even using a main contractor, the subbies will do that.
I use a google sheet to put things down in the order they should be done with deadlines noted in google calendar

Notion.so
Kanban board of all work needing doing with each ticket having full details inside including spreadsheets of costs, references and contacts. -
• #6354
I just use a notes file and a spreadsheet, simple is best - I often think of the midwit code meme for this type of thing even though Chris will say Notion is the best option :P I'd say he's simply in the middle of the curve

That sounds like a good idea as I guess you can easily increase/decrease the level of detail without compromising the overall layout.

You just need one person to fuck it and it knocks everyone. I had a tiled run a week over and the client got raging at me because I couldn't finish another part of the job because of it.
It had already ran over previous.

OK. I think it's going to be a Google sheet.
Notion is just too fiddly on a phone. So if I'm using something on a laptop it may as well be something simpler. Maybe for something more complicated it'll be a good shout - it's pretty much the same as my work MS Lists Kanban boards but without endlessly fucking around with setting up the views and categories.

As someone who’s 2/3 of the way through something similar, the thought of living in the building at the same time gives me the fear. It would have to be a big place with another floor to retreat to.
As to the planning? It’s all in my head apart from budgets estimated beforehand and continued prompts from my partner asking if I have spoken to electrician/tiler/plumber etc.
don’t underestimate the research/sourcing time for all the stuff you want and the stuff you didn’t know you needed. -

I'm glad I'm living in mine, means I can keep an eye on all the trades who seem to think a drawing is a suggestion rather than a design! Also hasn't cost me any more to get insurance during the works. I don't WfH though....

I absolutely DO NOT understand what Notion is or why it exists
-
• #6361
We've got another floor. Although it will be largely full of the stuff from the ground floor.
Total time for the floor and associated works is 2wks...which is a lot of money on a hotel. There is only part of a wall coming down, so it's not a huge amount of work and dust - or for that long.
- Half a wall down
- Plaster a ceiling and fill the void(?) from the wall removal
- Remove existing floor tiles
- Radiators x2
- Self level (the absolutely must be out for 24hrs period)
- Lay floor and skirting
- Redecorating (us)
the stuff you didn’t know you needed
This is the main thing that worries me. Even when you check I worry there will be a Colombo, just one more thing, that will be a blocker and take forever to source.
- Half a wall down

DO NOT understand what Notion is
It's Google Keep/OneNote with a Kanban feature.
why it exists
Because Google Keep/OneNote don't have a Kanban feature.

Also hasn't cost me any more to get insurance during the works. I don't WfH though....
Can you expand on this please?

Sorry, they should be two separate points!
I had to get a building works endorsement on my home insurance policy which didn't cost anything extra as we aren't moving out.
I don't work from home so I get to escape the building site whilst most of the shit is going on.

Cool. I hadn't thought about it, but does that mean I should be contacting my insurance to notify them?
-
• #6366
I feel the same about you.
-
• #6367
Check your small print but most do require that eg for works that require building regulations approval
-
• #6368
I used a combination of Miro for planning / tracking work and Google sheets for tracking costs, purchases and deliveries.
But I hate project management tools, I don't even use them in my actual project management job.

Anyone got engineered floor for a bedroom recommendations? To go over electric UFH and ideally in the £20/sqm range

Does anyone know of a company or service which would turn carpet into a rug? We have leftover from our carpet fitting and would quite like to make a rug from it.
-
• #6372
Our bog standard local carpet provider was able to turn some offcuts into runners for us - think they just run it through a binding machine.

Thanks. Maybe my budget is unrealistic but I've definitely got to the "fuck, running out of money" stage!

When is a kitchen not a kitchen? When it's in boxes in the lounge! Had a delivery of cabinets this morning from IKEA. Like jenga getting it all sandwiched in. AO coming later with the cooker hood and washing machine.
Should of really asked everyone to hold off deliveries as trades are glacial at getting the quotes in. Anyone actually had all the stuff for a very long time before getting it underway?

how do I decide what shower to buy? Is there somewhere I can go and try them out (!) or do I just buy a reputable brand and based on aesthetics?
When we had some work done all the planning went down the pan as builder / plumber / electrician / tiler / plasterer just seemed to come and go as they pleased lol
