  • It does certainly look awesome, though the voice work seem a bit off compared to BotW. Very much looking forward to getting my hands on it. Hoping there's a Master Mode from the offset so my daughter and I can continue to have different saves!

  • I've never played any game with Zelda /link letalone BotW so I can't appreciate the hype

Do need to play as I know BotW is universally acclaimed

  • Am much excite.

My 6 year old was shocked when they discovered I had (not we had!) a switch.

Call me old fashioned, but I believe in the traditional parenting approach of "nobody gets to get in the way of daddy's video gaming".

  • Hmm, Curry’s have Zelda at £45 with voucher for preorder.
    Bought bought

  • I personally never enjoyed any 3d Zelda games despite trying quite a few of them, but BOTW blew me away. It singlehandedly got me to buy a switch and I loved it.

  • I hope you bought Link's Awakening too. Love the Switch remake.

  • I played ocarina of time a little at uni about 20 or whatever years ago. That was the first real LoZ experience I had and I thought it was fun but I never got in the hours to complete it.

My wife bought me a Switch when my son was born along with BotW. I tried BotW but just couldn't figure it out, so I shelved it in place of stardew valley and mariokart. But I tried again about a year ago and my son caught me one time (he'd never played or seen a game being played before) and I just thought fuck it. As most parents will at some stage.

He was the Morpheus to my Neo.

He somehow instinctively knew to try weird shit and could figure out puzzles that left me puzzled. We completed it in no time and went on to do all the DLC, master mode etc. Haven't got all the koroks yet (little leafy/twiggy characters that are hiding across the map and give a seed which can be exchanged for a bigger inventory). He lets me handle lynels (which are kind of big bosses but not bosses) but he can do all the rest.

I've tried reading a little bit about the other games but I'd say my knowledge of what's canon is still pretty lacking beyond the basic settings and characters.

So I think in my case a lot of the hype is the shared enjoyment I'll have with kiddo. But also having incrementally watched the trailers over the past year or two as they were released, the last one was a pretty big leap. The teaser, first trailers and even the gameplay demo, while great, were pretty tame and there was lots of chat of it being a 60 quid DLC for BotW. But the latest trailer shows a LOT. The new abilities (fuse and ultrahand - where you can join objects together to give them new abilities) have insane potential. Anything glowing green in the trailer shows something that has been built - not from a recipe or strict formula, just from imagination - finding an old rocket and sticking it on a shield = zoomies. It will be so fun to mess around and discover what's possible.

    Gonna watch the trailer again.

  • Thanks for the heads up. Where did you put the code in? I tried to check out but didn't have a voucher code option anywhere at any point so bailed

  • You have to go quite far in the process:

Click checkout, add email, confirm delivery vs collection, add address, add payment method and then just above payment method there's an add voucher option - voucher being ZELDA25
But they really hide that thing in there so you have to look hard!

  • It’s really late in the checkout.
On the payment options, there is a line that says enter voucher code/gift card, and you enter it there.

I forget where it is every time I use currys. Would make sense to have it in the shopping basket screen really…

    Code is zelda25

  • Thanks chaps. Tried doing a live chat to find that out but the perverts want you to do a fucking Skype style video call with them. Fucking weirdos.

  • We’re in the age where £45 is considered a bargain, compared to the £60 retail price…

£/gameplay hours should be superb though!

  • N64 games were £50 in the nineties.

(Good) Games are great value in 2023.

  • A Link to the Past on SNES would've been £80+ inflation corrected.

Sure, a lot of companies absolutely take the piss with DLC & micro (some not so micro) transactions. But considering the prices for video games over the past 30 years, I think we were long overdue a bump.

  • That may be true but I remember often going to HMV and walking out with a £20 for ps1 or 2 so the current £60-70rrp does feel like more. It's probably also because there's fewer mid bracket games being made and they're all so expensive to develop these days

  • You’re right, I feel sorry and am grateful to my parents having bought them for me!

Feels different when you’re paying for it as well as for your kids.

Playing Mario Kart and switch games with the 7 year old is joyous fun, so well worth it.

  • It singlehandedly got me to buy a

whatever the new console is that is needed to buy the new game...

  • I've only had a Vita & Switch since my PS2 so not overly familiar with modern console game availability & pricing. But there's certainly a whole host of £10-20 indie/mid-bracket titles to choose from on Switch (less so on the Vita). Though on the flipside you've got Nintendo providing the first-party titles and their commitment to barely ever having any sort of sales.

I think the PS2 was also a bit of a peak in terms of quantity of third-party titles that were available at less than the standard full price. (Though I distinctly recall paying £40 for Croc when I got my PS1).

Do miss the days of picking up second-hand titles for the PS1 & 2 though, something that's been all but killed off by digital downloads. Also definitely feels like devs & publishers were less risk averse then so it was common to find some more out there titles (not exactly expecting Mr Moskeeto Definitive Edition to be dropping any time soon).

  • I like the reassurance of a physical copy, particularly with cartridges. Feel like they retain resale value better.

  • Yep, and I feel like I've painted myself into a corner with my daughter probably getting her own Switch in a year or two and me having to re-buy a bunch of games that I've already bought.

  • I had 2 switches (leant one to my parents during lockdown, then bought another one for my partner to play animal crossing during lockdown) and you can have a way to share games on different switches. It's less convenient than just buying the games multiple times but is possible.

  • This was really lovely to read. Look forward to hearing the adventures of CYOA and mini-CYOA in tears of the kingdom.
